Vasso

Summary

Vasso is a 17-year-old cleric controlled by Dayna in the campaign. Despite this age, Vasso appears much younger—looking like someone who could pass for 14 due to being very skinny and scrawny, though of normal height. A deeply religious figure who reveres both the Rex Tree as "the mother tree" and Mother Earth as deity, Vasso possesses a large wingspan and what are described as awkward, gangly "little boy hands." By Session 5, Vasso has been practicing prayers and discovering new clerical talents, feeling divine presence as vibrations in hands, though possesses zero wisdom which leads to catastrophic failures when attempting to cast spells. In Session 7, Vasso's magical understanding deepened when accidentally casting Guidance for the first time, experiencing it as direct communication from Mother Earth rather than recognizing it as Vasso's own spell-casting ability.

Vasso's defining characteristic is an oscillation between genuine terror and forced courage, though by Session 8 this courage has evolved into sustained moral action—confronting New Smoke Guards who extort merchants and using charisma-based abilities like "I am the law" to protect the vulnerable. When frightened, Vasso tries to puff out chest and make grand gestures to appear brave, though fear often manifests physically—tears, squealing, curling up, and at one point urinating slightly when confronted by danger. Despite this, Vasso possesses genuine paladin instincts: when warned of approaching threats, Vasso immediately "changes brain" and goes into paladin mode, taking defensive stances with sword drawn between companions and darkness. In combat, Vasso can enter wild rage when friends are hurt, executing devastating attacks with methodical precision. This capacity for protective action coexists with deep compassion and guilt, particularly toward creatures Vasso perceives as pathetic or pitiable. Vasso's good alignment compels endangering self to protect those weaker, even when that instinct proves misguided.

Vasso's upbringing involved hunting or farming and time at a commune where boys from nearby villages would hide in trees and throw rocks at guards, creating lasting hyper-vigilance and suspicion of ambushes. Homeschooled and trusting by nature, Vasso believes what others tell him and struggles to understand why anyone would lie, questioning "why would anybody lie? It's not a thing, like, ever" and viewing dishonesty as dishonorable and potentially hurtful. This trusting nature was fundamentally shattered when the party taught Vasso about lies in Session 6, leaving Vasso "more knowledgeable, but sadder" and "disillusioned from his innocence." The lesson emphasized that "lies are good sometimes" except when told by Nick Silver. This transformation manifested physically in Vasso's eyes—the gold flecks that once shone brightly now appear tarnished or brownish, with reduced brightness and increased blue tones—and emotionally in a period of depression that began to lift in Session 7 through renewed connection with Mother Earth. Despite now understanding deception, Vasso remains the party's moral compass and advocate, delivering passionate speeches about fairness and righteousness that manifest with holy aura, though attempts to maintain knowledge and maturity sometimes involve nodding along to technical discussions while not understanding them. Vasso feels deep shame about matters considered sinful—including "thinking about anybody before you get, you know, binded to the person binding"—and becomes deeply embarrassed when friends mock religious beliefs. Described as "bashful, but confident," this confidence sometimes leads to poor judgment—critical failures at key moments create significant complications, though Vasso remains strongly principled about justice and distinguishes the party's actions from theft.

History

Session 2

Vasso's trust in Dunko Guzman stems from Dunko's connection to Vasso's aunt, Fat Nancy Cat. When Vasso declares "I trust him pretty clearly because he knows my aunt. Yeah. Fat Nancy cat," this familial association overrides any suspicion. Out of what Vasso describes as "a general sense of duty," Vasso insists the party must investigate Dunko's private quarters upstairs.

During the investigation, the party encounters Geese at Dunko's Apartment. Vasso immediately springs into action, explaining "this is instinctual for dinner because this is, like his upbringing right there." Vasso spreads his wingspan wide and runs toward the geese, attempting to grab their necks with "little boy hands." When Sucks needs help, Vasso responds enthusiastically: "And he's in it, man. He is ready to help you because, you know, his friend needs help." The combat leaves Vasso bleeding from the cheek with gooseblood everywhere, but Vasso remains optimistic, telling Cat and the others: "this is all gonna be worth it when we're riding away at our pigs."

After the fight, Vasso treats the dead geese with respect. Taking one for dinner, Vasso displays another so "it looks like it's sleeping." When the party discovers a gold military bust (the "man face"), Vasso carefully wraps it in a handkerchief as evidence, creating a bindle to carry all the stolen goods. Vasso volunteers for this responsibility, stating "I can do this for us. I can. I can do this for all of us," convinced the evidence serves "the greater good."

At the Rex Tree, Vasso's religious nature emerges. Touching the tree "in a weird religious y way," Vasso attempts to commune with what Vasso calls "the mother tree." The attempt fails critically with a roll of 6, inadvertently triggering a trap mechanism that seals the party in the Underground Cavern Beneath Rex Tree. Rather than recognizing the mistake, Vasso interprets the event spiritually, whispering to everyone: "the mother tree swallowed us. The mother tree swallowed us, everyone. She wants us here." Vasso begins collecting acorns "for bread later."

Underground, the party discovers Robed Cult Figures engaged in what appears to be a ritual. Vasso, hungry from not eating all day and carrying the dead goose, becomes excited rather than alarmed. Squinting to stare at the cultists, Vasso searches for "long lost family members," explaining to the party: "I heard that somebody like that assault certain sect of group that love trees was doing a feast." Vasso misreads the situation entirely, declaring "this is the best" and reasoning that "they're clearly celebrating, like, a harvest. This is totally like my family." When attempting to use Discern Realities to identify if the cultists are Vasso's religious kin, Vasso critically fails again (rolling a 4), falling partway through a gap in the earthwork with hips and legs stuck, hanging suspended and revealing the party's presence to The Masked Cultists.

Episode: "Session 3"

Vasso begins the session trapped behind the portcullis with companions in the Caverns beneath the Rex Tree, terrified by stories about the Sniff Lord. When Sucks compliments Vasso's brave chest-puffing, Vasso tries to maintain a facade, responding "Thanks. Thanks. It's not a big deal. We're gonna be fine," though tears stream down Vasso's face. When the Robed Figure with Dog Mask orders them into the caverns, Vasso questions "Where?" trying to understand what is expected.

The situation intensifies when Safia transforms from bat to human form directly in front of Vasso. Vasso "absolutely screams" and goes non-responsive, staring wide-eyed in shock. However, when Safia warns about the approaching threat from the darkness, Vasso immediately shifts mental gears, going into paladin mode and positioning between companions and the approaching danger with sword drawn. Vasso becomes "a frozen little statue" in a protective stance, muttering affirmations: "I've got this, I've got this. I'm gonna beat it. I'm gonna get it. It's fine. It can't pass me." Despite this determination, Vasso is scared enough to urinate slightly.

When the Sniff Lord approaches, Vasso demonstrates both tactical thinking and athletic skill by executing a perfect football spiral throw with the Dead Goose to distract the creature. Vasso successfully uses the I Am the Law class move, rolling a 10 to command the creature in the name of mother earth, shouting and clanging sword on rocks to make the Sniff Lord back away. Drawing on farm experience with hogs, Vasso then completely empties the Adventurer's Kit of all its rope (all three uses) to hog-tie the subdued creature.

The victory brings no satisfaction. Vasso experiences intense guilt, nearly crying and saying "Like, I mean, should I. It's real bad. Should I have done this? I don't know. And I starting to cry a little bit, but like it's so sad and it looks like my great, great, great, great grandpa uncle." Vasso continues, "Oh God. I don't know, guys. Like, I feel bad. Should I untie it? Should I untie it? I'm starting to cry a little bit in real life now." When the creature violently headbutts the cavern wall, Vasso realizes it must remain restrained despite sympathy, reflecting afterward: "I feel strong, but I feel, like, a deep sense of pity of things that I'm scared of now" and wondering "Maybe there's kind of as. As afraid of you are as thing of things. Maybe there's something else going on."

Episode: "Session 4"

Vasso begins the session dealing with the aftermath of a mission, holding all recovered items except money, which they refuse to touch directly. When questioned about possession of goods, Vasso takes clear moral stance: "No, but we're not. We didn't steal it. We took it so that way we can return it to the rightful owners." This establishes their ethical framework and distinguishes their actions from theft.

During negotiations with Louise Guzman at New Smoke, Vasso experiences complete bewilderment at the party's chaotic bargaining tactics. Having "seen people negotiate, but never like this," Vasso admits "he does not know what we're doing anymore because it's just like all over the place." Despite personal confusion, Vasso puts on Negotiating Hoods and advocates for the party, delivering an impassioned speech: "For me and my friends, we believe we should be paid a fair and righteous rate for this strenuous task of being escorts. And thus we should get paid what is standard where people are in our employ." A holy aura manifests during this righteousness speech. Throughout negotiations, Vasso experiences intense hunger, eyes getting "really big and shiny" when payment is mentioned.

During The Frozen Nilik Investigation, Vasso's commune experience becomes a crucial asset. When tracking a mysterious creature through frozen forest, Vasso immediately draws sword and shield "because he's very suspicious and somebody is about to prank us." This defensive posture stems from past trauma: "in Vasso's time at the commune, boys from the village would sometimes come in and hide up in the trees and throw rocks at us while we were guarding the wall." Using hyper-vigilance developed from being bullied, Vasso takes in environmental details and successfully rolls Discern Realities (9, modified to 10 with Safia's meal bonus), witnessing a tree freeze before their eyes and determining critical tactical information: the party is following whatever causes the freezing rather than being followed, giving them stealth advantage.

When evidence suggests something hurt or scared, Vasso's compassion emerges: "So it sounds like this might be somebody that actually needs our help. Or a rabbit." Despite joking about possibilities, Vasso maintains focus on helping rather than attacking. Entering The Misty Forest, Vasso suggests friendly approach and proposes swaying to Running Up That Hill so "maybe if it wants to, it can also sway with Kate Bush and then we'll be like dancing together," confirming ability to participate: "Yeah, I know how to move my body for a weird cult." When the encounter with The Frozen Blob occurs, Vasso's good alignment triggers: "My alignment is good. And I'm sorry. I need to endanger myself to protect someone weaker than me. And I assumed. You know, I was wrong. I was very wrong." Following this encounter, Vasso reflects on their bond with Sucks, noting potential growth: "I feel like he might be better because he didn't go and attack the guy right off the bat like he did with the geese."

Episode: "Session 5"

During the journey to New Smoke with the cart of goods, Vasso announces a significant spiritual development: "FYI, guys, while we're on this little journey, I've discovered some new talents, by the way. So I've been, like, practicing some of my. My prayers because I feel like every time I'm doing prayers, like, I'm. I'm kind of, like, really getting touched by my God, you know?" Vasso reveals feeling Earth Mother's presence as vibrations in hands and gains access to two new level one spells: Magic Weapon and Bless. When Sucks makes jokes about masturbation and thinking about Earth Mother, Vasso turns "deep red" with embarrassment, explaining beliefs about sin: "I think just like, you know, thinking about anybody before you get, you know, binded to the person binding." Vasso adds that such thoughts feel "disrespectful" and cause deep shame, though admits uncertainty about whether punishment follows. Serving as navigator during the journey, Vasso rolls a 7 on the navigation attempt.

When the party encounters the pumpkin field and Sucks is grabbed by the Gordian, Vasso immediately declares "I'm gonna say I have to go save Sucks," though struggles with indecision, "doing that weird thing where he's like going, like turning towards. Turning towards Sucks, turning back towards you and Safia and going back and forth because he does not know what to do." Before charging in, Vasso uses prayer to detect whether the creature is evil, asking Earth Mother: "Can I do a little prayer to my goddess mother and ask her, please protect me from evil as a way to also say, what here is evil if it isn't evil?" Receiving confirmation of the creature's malevolence, Vasso attempts to invoke blessing: "Earth mother, please let me be super strong and let my sword sing in flesh." However, spell casting fails catastrophically when rolling a 6, resulting in being immediately grabbed by the Gordian's vines and dragged through the pumpkin field.

When Cat frees Vasso with a precise arrow shot, Vasso responds gratefully: "You honor me." Immediately using Exterminatus to charge back at the creature, Vasso attempts to hack at the vine tentacles but fails with a roll of 3. The Gordian strikes with a pumpkin wielded like a meteor hammer; Vasso brings up shield just in time, taking only 2 damage and a bloody lip rather than full concussion. The pumpkin goo that splatters on Vasso has a moisturizing effect, making hair extra glossy, prompting Vasso to ask "But do I look cute still?" and note "Oh, that's nice. Yeah, but now it also makes me look a little bit like a ginger, though." For the final attack, Vasso charges in rage while covered in goo, executing a devastating and methodical assault: "Well, I'm enraged, obviously. Covered in goo. And I come at it and strike down to the right and slash into it. And then I lift it up and I slash it again. Like I fully dropped my shield at this point, by the way. So I'm two handing this because I've been so clumsy. I lost my shield somewhere back in the. In the maze." Vasso continues, "And then I jump on it, both feet and then stab it right down in the stalk and press my sword, right. And like I basically sword and the stoned this thing because my so deep inside I'm like wildly enraged at this thing." Fueled by the declaration "But I'm going to murder this pumpkin for hurting my friend's ankle," the attack deals 12 total damage—9 base plus 3 from Exterminatus—with Cat's earlier called shot preventing Vasso from taking damage on the 7-9 hack and slash roll. After the battle, Vasso learns of being ranked seventh on Sucks's friends list.

Episode: "Session 6"

Vasso begins the session by packing up the cart to feel useful while missing the conversation between Sucks and Cat. When the party discusses technical aspects of Goober's capabilities, Vasso nods along to appear knowledgeable while actually confused about the entire concept. During Sucks' demonstration about "good lies" intended to teach Cat, Vasso serves as the audience, witnessing what he believes is a genuine attack. His trusting nature leads him to try acting as the mature party member, telling Sucks to apologize to "Katniss" for hurting her. After the ruse is revealed, Vasso claims he "knew the whole time" to avoid appearing foolish, though Safia later reassures him the others are "just being idiots."

During the Sweater Entrapment Incident, Vasso attempts to help Cat but rolls a 3, catastrophically worsening the situation by grabbing sweaters and pulling them onto her. When the Wandering Traveler approaches, Vasso serves as primary point of contact, greeting him politely and laughing along with his pumpkin joke. His social comfort makes him the natural liaison, checking with Cat about accepting the traveler's help. When Cat asks if the man is "hot," Vasso literally reaches out to check his temperature before pulling back. He suggests the practical solution of lifting sweaters from the bottom, working with the traveler over several minutes to free Cat. While helping, Vasso makes conversation about the traveler's origins, becoming confused about directions when learning he came from New Smoke: "Wait, wait. While we were in this field, I got completely turned around because I thought you were coming from the opposite direction of New Smoke, man."

The confrontation with Nick Silver showcases Vasso's struggle to serve as moral authority while his companions pursue aggressive tactics. When Cat shoots Nick, Vasso attempts to interfere, rolling a 9 that reduces Cat's effectiveness but doesn't stop her. After Nick throws Cat to the ground, Vasso activates his I Am The Law ability, invoking "the authority of not being mean to children" and yelling "For the children!" His roll of 10 successfully compels Nick to pause, defend his actions, and grants Vasso +1 forward against him. Vasso argues that Nick "lie from children and then just leave," attempting to hold him accountable. When Nick freezes the party with his staff, Dayna notes that Vasso is "totally panicking." Throughout the encounter, Vasso expresses confusion about maintaining moral authority when his allies pursue opposite approaches: "how am I supposed to stand up for my, My, my bros if we're doing opposite things all the time."

Episode: "Session 7"

Vasso entered Session 7 still processing the emotional fallout from learning about lies in the previous session. His depression manifested physically in his tarnished-looking eyes and emotionally in his adoption of an emo aesthetic—wearing charcoal eyeshadow rubbed from campfire ashes and listening to "Welcome to the Black Parade" on repeat via Sucks Benedict's mini disc player. The party noted his changed demeanor, with Sucks Benedict observing to Cat that "Vasso's eyes are less shiny" and commenting that "it's like the same number of flecks, but the gold is kind of like, just brownish."

As the party approached New Smoke, Vasso pulled up his Bartering Hood not for bartering purposes but to hide his appearance. The entire town appeared dominated by smithies and industrial work, triggering his anxiety about being teased for his vines: "I got teased about it a lot, especially by like the blacksmith kids and stuff, so. And there's like, this entire town seems like it's a smithy. So Vasso's mostly scared of bullying right now." He wrinkled his nose at Sucks Benedict's urine-based disguise plan, clearly uncomfortable with the deception.

When the party prepared to investigate the Underground Canal System, Vasso experienced a pivotal moment of character growth. Having never seen a canal before, he knelt down and prayed: "please, oh, please, Mother Earth, guide us on our way and show us the right way. And I know you will because you're good. And you gave me powers." This act of faith [accidentally triggered the Guidance spell](timestamp://7bc7cc3d-4c57-45f8-a703-bb7b97509d80/45:30), revealing magical abilities Vasso hadn't fully understood he possessed. He experienced a vision of green motes of light forming the symbol of a tree enclosed in a circle, successfully finding a path through the maze-like drainage system. Though he rolled a six on the spell, causing it to distance him from his deity with a minus-one penalty to future casting, Vasso felt empowered by the experience.

The spell-casting moment led to an awkward but meaningful bonding experience with Sucks Benedict, who punched Vasso hard in the shoulder while expressing admiration for his ability to "trick God into doing stuff." Sucks Benedict said, "I can barely register the insight there, but you can see a little bit of a sparkle coming back to Vasso's eyes." This interaction helped alleviate Vasso's depression considerably, with Vasso remarking he was "feeling a little tuckered out, but so happy. I think that fixed his depression a lot." With newfound confidence from his recent communion, Vasso climbed up from the underground canal when chaos erupted in the Pine Cone Man's tent. He attempted to use his "I am the law" class move, calling out "Hey, everyone, stop in the name of all that is good." Rolling an 8, he successfully invoked his divine authority, introducing himself as "Vasso, guardian of the fence" after realizing he lacked an official title and wanting "to seem important now because he's had so many successes in this small amount of time." However, when Sucks Benedict attempted further deception, Vasso visibly struggled—"starting to, like, look dark in his eyes again" and glaring at Sucks Benedict, "but he doesn't want to throw him under the bus. But he knows about lying now and he's not okay with this." When asked to corroborate a lie, "Vasso just slowly shakes his head. No can" and "Vasso didn't say that because that would be a lie."

Episode: "Session 8"

Vasso arrives at the New Smoke Market wearing mismatched armor and flip flops that cause blisters, asking vendors "Does anybody in the market have a bargain bin?" When Brusque responds that all of New Smoke is nothing but bargain bins, Vasso explains the practical need: "I want some cool shoes. Like something like, unique or whatever, but just something that doesn't give me as many blisters. Like, because, you know, I feel a little weird sometimes when I'm wearing my full armor but with flip flops." After finding armored shoes with decorative wing ornaments, Vasso negotiates poorly—rolling snake eyes—but pays the full 10 coins "with such excitement," valuing both function and aesthetics.

While eating meat patties at the Meat Party stall—having abandoned previous vegetarian principles—Vasso witnesses New Smoke Guards extorting the vendor and suggests to Safia, "Should we go stop them? Like, that seems unfair. Also, those meat patties smell kind of good." Feeling confident in the new shoes, Vasso puffs out chest and approaches the guards, declaring: "I think you might need to leave this lady alone because it sounds like she already paid you yesterday." Vasso then challenges the logic of their protection racket with a series of pointed questions: "So what's she even paying you for, though?" and "How will she keep paying you if you keep demanding money every single time?" The reasoning continues: "And then she can't survive, and then she dies, and then you don't get any more money for your boss man. Won't he be pissed at you?"

Using the "I am the law" move with a charisma roll of 9 (7 plus +2 modifier), aided by Safia to reach 10, Vasso successfully intimidates the guards into leaving, earning +1 forward against guards in general. This confrontation demonstrates Vasso's paladin instincts extending beyond combat situations—the same protective courage that manifests in battle now applies to defending oppressed merchants from systemic injustice.

After the incident, Vasso discusses with Safia the broader situation in New Smoke, noting that the New Smoke Gang took over only a few weeks ago and suggesting "We could probably help them." Vasso advises watching for gang members identifiable by their torn denim vests with spikes. When Safia mentions something sounding like poetry, Vasso whispers conspiratorially, "That was the poem. To be honest, it seems like it was, wasn't it?" The session ends with Vasso joking "We're all on a date now."

Episode: "Session 9"

In Session 9, Vasso continues attempting to project a cool, tough image, declaring [timestamp://caf38850-a8a7-4025-9682-6fa313e1cdd5/00:00]("I'm just trying to be cool. I'm trying to be cool like sex"). However, these attempts consistently fail when trying to wink at Greta, instead just blinking awkwardly. Companions reassure Vasso that he is cool and kind despite these fumbles. Later, when the party decides to conduct reconnaissance on the foundry, Vasso "tries to wink again. And it's still not working," continuing the running gag. Despite the social awkwardness, Vasso suggests having a "morning date" with Greta.

Vasso initiates strategic discussion by recounting the earlier food stall confrontation, advocating for the party to find a solution to New Smoke's guard problem with characteristic optimism: "That's why I feel like we could probably, like, as a team, I'm sure we could probably fix this situation." This leads to a crucial strategic suggestion: "why don't we just talk to the mayor?" The proposal sets the party on course to free The Mayor of New Smoke from The Foundry.

During conversation with Yassandra, Vasso makes a philosophical observation that inadvertently triggers an existential crisis, asking "Wait, is a people herder technically a mayor?" This comparison causes Yassandra to question the value of his swine herding profession. Vasso checks on Yassandra's emotional state, asking "Are you upset right now?" After learning about Yassandra's immortality, Vasso offers encouragement: "Well, that just means that you've got more time to practice, so." Vasso expresses shock about Yassandra's age and potential fragility, exclaiming "Oh, my God. I get why he was scared of going to the foundry. Now his bones are gonna shatter."

Later in the session, around 2am and despite being tired, Vasso provides crucial information about the Ever-Living Branch that has fused to Sucks Benedict's body. Drawing on knowledge from the commune background, Vasso recalls that older members (those in their later 20s and adults) who lost limbs would have them replaced with this kind of living wood, and some would attach them as augmentations even without losing limbs. Vasso explains these prosthetics can be removed through calm mental concentration and controlled breathing: "Oh yeah. Just put your mind to it, buddy." Vasso clarifies the difference between the circlet and the living wood limbs: "Mine is a symbol of my faith and how Earth Mother responds to my Obedience and my resolution," while "the limbs are, like, deeper." When Sucks pokes Vasso's circlet with the branch attached to his forehead, the interaction confirms that Sucks's head-mounted branch provides a more integrated connection than Vasso's circlet. Vasso recalls that The Carvers—the same group that makes the circlets—also create the living wood limbs.

Episode: "Session 10"

At the session's opening, Vasso stood at the edge of the market area of New Smoke with Cat. He had just woken from his trance-like autopilot state, having "nodded off for a second because it's late." The group prepared to infiltrate the Underground Tunnels Beneath New Smoke, with Vasso taking point wearing his hood and using his pigeon call to echolocate the tunnel structure. "I'm gonna walk up to the. To the stairwell and then make a. Make a pigeon noise to hear how deep it goes," he explained. His echolocation revealed the tunnel descended 30-40 feet at an angle and branched into multiple non-linear paths. Safia in rat form and Monster rode on his shoulders as he descended the stairs, positioning himself at the front of the stealth formation.

The infiltration failed catastrophically when Vasso encountered Thunder Hogs in the tunnels. He stepped from the shadows to strike one with his sword's pommel, but rolled a 3. The enemy caught his arm and wrenched it behind his back. The Thunder Hogs confiscated his sword and shield but left his circlet and gold sneakers. Vasso and Sucks were dragged bodily through the corridors and imprisoned together in a Metal Cell.

While imprisoned, Vasso experienced a spiritual breakthrough when attempting to cast the Light Spell. "I can try really hard. Oh, Mother Earth. Goddess, please, please. Glow around us. Glow around us," he prayed. His circlet began glowing with radiant sunlight, and the divine manifestation overwhelmed him: "And I'm like, oh, my God, I'm crying... I'm glowing now. I'm glowing, but I'm also crying, so you've got to do the Looking. Cuz I'm overwhelmed." Despite his emotional state, Vasso reluctantly agreed to participate in Sucks' escape plan involving a Taxidermy Bear, though he pointed out the obvious flaw: "We're not small boys. Sucks." He couldn't remember some of Sucks' past actions because they occurred while he was in autopilot mode.

Episode: "Session 11"

Vasso continued the party's infiltration of the Underground Facility, demonstrating the practical efficiency that has become characteristic of their approach to covert operations. When Kat knocked unconscious a third guard, Vasso immediately "peels out of the room, grabs the guy, and drags him into the cell" with the other two unconscious guards, then asked Kat to lock the room to ensure security. During planning sessions, Vasso joined Sucks and Safia in unison to correct Kat's misconception about their rescue target, clarifying "it's not the pig" but rather a civic employee. Serving as the party's scout on the Barracks Level, Vasso methodically checked rooms by listening at doors and peeking through openings, successfully dodging into a previous room when hearing a doorknob turn unexpectedly. Upon finding an unconscious guard, Vasso "quietly goes out, grabs the guy under his arms, and tries to pull him into a room," then thoughtfully placed "a blanket on the guy so it looks like he just went to sleep in the wrong bed."

Vasso's talent for deception reached new heights when Safia provided the stolen Ear Cuff Communication Device. Upon putting it on, Vasso experienced the device's warmth as "religious warmth" similar to "all my magic is. I think it's religion, but it's actually just technology," noting "it feels good. I like it." When Winslow reported Sucks as suspicious and called for Five Fingers, Vasso seized the opportunity to impersonate Five Fingers' voice, claiming to be held up and would "be right there" (rolling 14 on charisma). Vasso then escalated by creating a false emergency: "Hey, guys. Actually, sorry, I was being held up downstairs, but there's something weird going on in the basement. Can I get some backup? I probably need a few guys." When this required another roll, Vasso added urgency with "Oh, my God. Oh. Oh. Get down here fast" (rolling 12 on charisma). Cat kicked Vasso in the shin to "make it real," and the performance successfully diverted many Thunderhogs guards from the Assembly Hall to the Dungeons.

When the party located their rescue target, Vasso "sneaks past and rushes to the lady's side and starts untying her," later suggesting "what if you just, like, say that he's really nice or whatever? Because I think they might be in love maybe" during planning. During the confrontation with the Mayor of New Smoke, Vasso attempted to "grab her foot before she stomped down on" the Silver Object. The mayor injured Vasso in response, causing Vasso to look up "crying like his tears are welling up because that really hurts" and ask simply "why?" When pulled into the supernatural vision created by the object, Vasso heard the One-Handed Entity ask "What do you desire?" and later expressed frustration: "damn it, though. She was gonna tell us how to get out," followed by "wait, one sec. One sec. Let me, let me listen for a sec."
