Exterminatus
Summary
Exterminatus is an advanced paladin move in Dungeon World that Vasso selects upon reaching level 2 in Session 3 of the campaign. The move requires the paladin to speak aloud a promise to defeat a specific enemy, after which they deal plus 2d4 damage against that enemy but suffer minus 4 damage against all other opponents. This effect persists until the targeted enemy is defeated. If the paladin fails to defeat the enemy or abandons the fight, they must admit their failure, though the mechanical penalty continues until they find redemption. Dayna chooses this move specifically because it aligns with Vasso's guilt-driven personality and his tendency to make solemn vows.
Details
The mechanical effects of Exterminatus create a focused but risky combat stance. When a paladin invokes the move by speaking their promise aloud, they gain a significant damage bonus—plus 2d4—against their designated target. However, this specialization comes at a steep cost: the paladin deals minus 4 damage against any other enemy for the duration of the vow. The effect is not temporary or easily dismissed; it lasts until the promised enemy is defeated.
The move includes a failure condition with narrative weight. If the paladin fails to defeat their sworn enemy or gives up the fight, they can admit their failure. Despite this admission, the mechanical effects continue—the damage penalties and bonuses remain in place until the paladin finds a way to redeem themselves. This redemption mechanic is left deliberately open-ended, allowing for story-driven resolution.
Dayna selects Exterminatus during Vasso's advancement to level 2 because it "kind of plays into Vasso's general guilt" and would be "interesting story wise." Shawn comments that it's "a great name" and believes the move references Warhammer 40K, a tabletop wargame known for its grimdark themes. The name and mechanics both emphasize commitment and consequence, fitting Vasso's character arc as someone who carries guilt and makes binding promises.
History
Session 3
Exterminatus appears in Session 3 when Vasso levels up to level 2 after the party's encounter at the monastery. Dayna reviews the available Advanced Moves for the paladin class and selects Exterminatus from among the options. The full text of the move is read aloud: "When you speak aloud your promise to defeat an enemy, you deal plus 2d4 damage against that enemy and a minus 4 damage against anyone else. This effect lasts until the enemy is defeated. If you fail to defeat the enemy or give up the fight, you can admit your failure, but the effect continues until you find a way to redeem yourself."
Dayna explains the selection by noting that the move would be "interesting story wise" and that it "kind of plays into Vasso's general guilt." Shawn responds positively to the choice, calling it a "cool move" and commenting on the name itself: "And it's just a great name too." Shawn also notes the likely origin of the term, saying "I think it's a Warhammer 40K thing." The move's selection represents a deliberate narrative choice to mechanically reinforce Vasso's existing character traits and internal conflicts.
Episode: "Session 4"
During an equipment check in Session 4, Dayna momentarily refers to Exterminatus as "extraterrestrial" before correcting to the proper term. This brief confusion reveals the move's dramatic name while Vasso confirms their current loadout and capabilities. At this point in the campaign, Vasso notes having exhausted all adventuring gear supplies, though this depletion relates to consumable equipment rather than the permanent Exterminatus paladin move selected in Session 3.
Episode: "Session 5"
Vasso deployed Exterminatus multiple times during the combat encounter with the Gordian. The first use came after Cat freed Vasso from the Gordian's entangling vines with an arrow. Vasso declared, "I'm. I've come back to my feet. Hopefully. And I'm gonna do X Terminatus and charge at this pumpkin guy again." Shawn confirmed the ability's bonus damage: "And also you deal two D4 damage against that enemy." Vasso rolled the additional dice, reporting "So two four set of dice, which is an additional three," which combined with his 9 damage from a D10 weapon roll for a total of 12 damage. Shawn confirmed: "So you do 12 damage."
Vasso activated Exterminatus a second time later in the same combat, charging at the Gordian again after being struck. The ability proved central to Vasso's combat effectiveness against the evil creature throughout the encounter, allowing him to both close distance rapidly and deal substantial additional damage to his sworn enemy.
