Summary
The Misty Forest is a sparse, patchy forest located on the hills beyond the Frozen Waterfall, encountered by the party during The Frozen Nilik Investigation in Session 4 of the campaign. The forest becomes the setting for a dangerous tracking mission as Vasso, Safia, Cat, and Sucks pursue The Ice Blob through conditions of near-zero visibility and life-threatening cold. The location is characterized by thick, rolling fog that begins abruptly at the tree line and obscures everything beyond a few feet, combined with temperatures that drop far beyond normal evening chill into genuinely hazardous levels. The mist rises from the ground in ribbons and creates an environment where even experienced trackers struggle to maintain pursuit of their quarry.
Description
The forest sits atop a hill, with ribbons of mist visible coming over the edge as the party approaches the tree line. The trees themselves are sparse and patchy rather than densely packed, but once inside the tree line, visibility drops to almost nothing. The rolling mist obscures the forest completely, allowing the party to see only the trunks of nearby trees through the fog. The ground is covered in frost, and the azure blue scent trail that Safia tracks with the Sniff Lord's Dog Mask stays mostly on the ground, occasionally rising a couple feet but never ascending high into the trees.
The temperature inside the forest drops dramatically and rapidly upon entry. As one member of the party describes it, the cold moves beyond normal evening chill into something dangerous: "This isn't like, ooh, it's getting chilly because the sun's going down. It's like something is here. You're in danger." The cold is intense enough that Monster, Cat's animal companion, is shivering and curled up in a ball for warmth. The party can see their breath misting in front of them as they navigate the freezing environment.
The mist itself appears to be created by the environment reacting to The Ice Blob's presence, rolling and shifting as the creature moves through the forest. The fog bank begins precisely at the tree line and extends throughout the forest, creating an eerie boundary between the normal hillside and the supernaturally cold interior. The party enters during evening, which compounds the visibility challenges as darkness falls alongside the obscuring mist.
History
Session 4
The party enters the forest while pursuing The Ice Blob after it flees from them at the Frozen Waterfall. They track the creature up the hill and encounter the ribbons of mist coming over the edge. Once they cross the tree line into the sparse forest, visibility drops immediately, and the temperature plummets to dangerous levels.
The party spends approximately 15 to 20 minutes attempting to track the creature through the mist, finding the conditions nearly impossible for maintaining pursuit. Safia uses the Sniff Lord's Dog Mask to follow the azure scent trail along the ground, while the rest of the party struggles with the cold and obscured vision. The environment proves harsh enough that Monster requires protection from the freezing temperatures. The party observes trees in the forest that are being frozen by whatever they are pursuing, evidence of The Ice Blob's path through the area.
