The Ice Blob

Summary

The Ice Blob is a mysterious shapeless creature encountered by Safia, Sucks, Vasso, and Cat in Session 4 of the campaign. Initially appearing as a laundry hamper-sized entity in the Misty Forest, the blob is described as transparent light blue and crystalline, resembling a water droplet but made of viscous goo that freezes and breaks as it moves. Through Safia's AI Implant investigation, the creature is revealed to be a collection of many small things once connected to a corporate network, operating on programmed functions rather than conscious thought. The blob radiates extreme cold that freezes its surroundings and creates thick rolling mist, and appears responsible for The Frozen Nilik incident. Rather than aggressive, the creature is skittish and operates in various modes including cautious avoidance and replenishment, shrinking each time it produces perfect food replicas.

Appearance

The Ice Blob is approximately the size of a laundry hamper when first encountered, later shrinking to microwave-size after producing multiple food items. As one observer notes in Session 4, "It looks like that, but like the size of like a laundry hamper". The creature is described as shapeless: "It would be easier to describe it as shapeless, almost." Its form resembles "when you see like water drip on a leaf and it forms one of those little beads," but is "glassy, transparent, like, light, light blue."

The blob consists of viscous goo that freezes and breaks as it moves. "The blob itself looked like it was made of some sort of viscous goo. The way that it moved, it was moving like a pile of goo, basically, that was freezing and breaking." Ice forms continuously on its surface, creating a constantly shifting crystalline texture. The creature has no discernible mouth, eyes, or other features—it is entirely featureless. When it moves or produces items, it flattens out and can roll over materials to absorb them.

The blob radiates extreme cold that causes the surrounding environment to freeze and creates thick rolling mist wherever it goes. This cold appears to intensify when the creature is scared. When exposed to music from Sucks's Walkman, rippling patterns appear on its surface.

History

Session 4

The party tracks the blob to the Misty Forest after investigating The Frozen Nilik, discovering the creature responsible for the frozen bird. The blob initially appears fearful and skittish, operating in what Safia later identifies as "cautious avoidance mode."

Vasso attempts to communicate with the blob using Commune of Whispers, but the spell reveals no language, sentience, or thoughts—only silence. The creature does not register as evil or good; it is completely neutral. Safia uses Safia's AI Implant to scan the blob, discovering it is a collection of many small things once connected to a corporate network. The AI identifies multiple operational modes including cautious avoidance, Replenishment Mode, and a preservation function.

The party tests the blob's behavior with Popcorn, to which it is strongly attracted. When Sucks plays music on Sucks's Walkman, the blob moves closer and creates rippling patterns on its surface. The creature rolls over and consumes the popcorn, leaving little trace of the kernels.

After consuming the popcorn, the blob produces a perfect replica apple. The first apple tastes like cheesy popcorn—whatever materials it recently absorbed. Subsequent apples taste like plain popcorn, then burnt plastic, and eventually become completely tasteless as the blob's absorbed materials are depleted. Each time it produces food, the creature shrinks noticeably, eventually reducing to approximately microwave size.

The blob demonstrates its disassembly capabilities when tested with various materials, flattening out and rolling over objects to break them down. When confronted with fire or heat, it recedes back into the mist. The party speculates that the blob may have been created or controlled by a corporation, with suggested names including Lord Corp, Aperture Lab, and Felix Industries.

The incident with The Frozen Nilik appears to have been defensive rather than aggressive—the blob was likely startled by a bird, causing it to react with a directional cold blast that froze the creature mid-flight.
