Summary
The Frozen Nilik is a hollow between grassy hills located approximately 100-150 feet off the road between Rex Tree and New Smoke. In Session 4 of the campaign, the party discovers this location completely flash frozen despite the mild pumpkin-season weather. The site contains The Frozen Blob, a mysterious crystalline creature that radiates extreme cold, and bears evidence of a recent defensive incident rather than an attack. The investigation of this site launches a tracking expedition into the wilderness.
Description
The Frozen Nilik presents a stark contrast to the surrounding environment. While the season typically brings "nice, cool (but not too cold)" evenings during pumpkin season, this hollow is completely flash frozen. Bushes throughout the area are brittle like glass, and frost covers every surface. Huge ice crystals climb up into the air "as if they were formed rapidly," and steam continuously rises from the frozen surfaces.
The freeze pattern itself is directional rather than radiating outward. Investigation reveals a specific point within the nilik from which the freezing effect was directed, suggesting "it's not a blast radius at all, but was actually directed from a spot at the Nilik." A frozen bird lies among the frozen vegetation, caught mid-flight by the sudden temperature drop.
The word "nilik" is identified as a Victorian-era term for a hollow between hills.
History
Session 4
The party encounters the Frozen Nilik while traveling between Rex Tree and New Smoke. The location's unusual state immediately draws their attention—everything is flash frozen in conditions that should not support such extreme cold.
Upon investigation, the group determines that the freezing pattern originated from a specific point within the hollow, fired at something rather than exploding outward. The evidence suggests "some sort of fight or experiment or something," with the freeze appearing to be "leftover residue" involving "advanced chemical/alchemical theory."
Safia uses Communion of Whispers and Safia's AI Implant to analyze the site and discovers The Frozen Blob, a laundry-hamper-sized creature made of transparent light blue crystalline material. Through this communion, Safia learns the blob has multiple "connectivity points" similar to Bluetooth signals and operates on programmed modes including caution, preservation, and assessment.
The party determines the blob was likely startled by the frozen bird, causing it to react defensively and create the frozen environment. The blob appears to be fleeing rather than attacking. Vasso offers the creature Popcorn, which it absorbs by rolling over the food, flattening out, and disassembling the matter.
Cat plays Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush from a device, and the blob responds positively to the music, moving closer as the volume decreases and maintaining a specific comfortable distance. When the party dances to the music, the blob elongates its shape and creates rippling patterns on its surface with cracking ice crystals, appearing to mimic the vibrations.
The blob shows no mouth, no apparent traditional language or sentience, and cannot respond to verbal communication. It maintains dangerous cold within 10 feet of its position, though it can modulate its temperature slightly when calm.
Monster tracks a trail leading away from the Frozen Nilik into the wilderness, launching the next phase of the investigation. Sucks accompanies the tracking expedition.
