This leads to renegotiation with Guzman, who disputes the existence of standard rates in market economics. During their journey toward New Smoke, the party investigates The Frozen Nilik—a flash-frozen area where they discover tracks leading into a misty forest. Following the trail using Sniff Lord's Dog Mask, they encounter The Ice Blob, a crystalline, water-droplet-shaped creature radiating extreme cold. Sucks accidentally injures Cat while attempting to create warmth with Toxic Burning Goo. The party determines the blob is non-hostile, frightened, and attracted to popcorn. Safia connects to the blob using Safia's AI Implant, discovering it was once part of a networked system. The session concludes with the party making camp alongside the blob, which becomes the latest addition to their traveling group. Cat levels up, taking the Divine Favor move and gaining access to Commune and Cast a Spell as a level one cleric.

Events

Shawn explains that followers have specific moves for getting them to perform actions and are designed to be more memorable in play.

Louise Guzman confronts the party about their failure, presenting a note claiming to be from The Sniff Lord that reads: "you have crossed this Sniff Lord for the last time. We are disappointed. We have taken the contents of the locke and killed the children you sent to retrieve your book." The party's survival immediately exposes the ruse. Through out-of-character discussion, the players deduce the real culprits are The Sniff Lord's acolytes—specifically the dog-masked people connected to Janet's Husband. The party presents the Gold Wedding Ring they stole from one of these acolytes as evidence.

After extended negotiation involving negotiating hoods, Guzman agrees to a deal: he will tell the organization the job was completed, buy the party's pigs, arrange a massage for Monster, and pay them to escort Guzman's Shipment to near Smoke. The shipment consists of hippie blankets, oregano bricks, and hair dreading solution. Monster receives an elaborate cat massage with fish oil, towels, and cucumbers, though the result is described as smelly and matted.

The party completes their job recovering Louise Guzman's pigs and receives 50 coins as payment. Guzman bought the pigs back from them and fronted them cache, with the pigs now lashed to a cart three-by-three, pulling the party's load. The party prepares for escorting the shipment to New Smoke, described as a rough frontier settlement "as far into the wastes as any place dares to exist." New Smoke is a harsh but wealthy town that survives by collecting scrap from the wasteland, melting it down into materials, and trading these for food.

During shopping in Rex Tree, Sucks attempts to gather local information by grabbing a random passerby but gets violently pushed down and told to remove his hood. The party examines equipment lists and discovers that the standard rate for escorts along monster-infested roads is 54 coins per day—significantly more than they're being paid. This leads them to return to Louise Guzman for renegotiation, with both Cat and Guzman donning negotiating hoods. Guzman disputes their economic reasoning, arguing "there is no such thing as a standard standard rates" in true market economics. He offers 15 coins instead. Guzman claims "the road between here and New Smoke is not monster infested. It is bandit infested at best."

The party trades their Purple Goo with the Novelty Goods Shopkeeper for Toxic Burning Goo, described as a weapon that should not get in eyes or mouth. The shopkeeper holds the jug up to the light to examine the purple goo. The party discovers Pipe Leaf is expensive in Rex Tree. They learn a caravan is going to New Smoke but not leaving until two days from now, while Louise gave them only three days to reach their destination.

Safia prepares a meal enriched by Halfling Pipe Leaf. She creates decorative bowls—one with a zipper up the front for Cat, and one with baby shoes attached for Vasso. The bowls are filled with popcorn mixed with pieces of Reese's peanut butter cup.

During their journey, the party approaches where "the forest that stretched around Rex Tree has started to thin out into just, like, some grassy hills." They discover The Frozen Nilik—a hollow where everything is flash frozen. Cat investigates and determines the frozen area was not a blast radius but was directed from a spot at the nilik. Monster sniffs around and starts trotting away from the road into the wilderness. Cat compares the temperature differential and notes "it couldn't have been that long ago otherwise it would have."

The party finds The Frozen Waterfall—approximately 12 feet high, frozen almost completely with rushing water underneath. Monster loses the trail there. They see a tree in the sparse forest freeze right before their eyes. Safia recalls a story from near Whistler about an alchemist trying to work on more efficient fuel using alchemical principles who ended up "burning his town to the ground in like less than a minute."

Vasso examines the environment and notices what looks like a path—"something moved here through here very quickly. But, like, change direction a lot." Based on the cadence of movement, Vasso determines "something fled through here." Cat suggests "this might be somebody that actually needs our help. Or a rabbit."

The party follows icy tracks up a hill into a sparse forest filled with rolling mist. Safia uses Sniff Lord's Dog Mask to track by scent, discovering an azure blue trail. The party enters The Misty Forest together, with Sucks leaving a trail of popcorn, Vasso holding onto Sucks's shirt, and Monster shivering on Safia's shoulder. After wandering for 15-20 minutes, the cold becomes dangerously painful—not "it's getting chilly because the sun's going down" but "something is here. You're in danger."

Sucks attempts to create warmth by spraying Toxic Burning Goo in a circle around the party and igniting it, causing a massive burst of flame that singes Cat's eyebrows and deals 3 damage. The fire briefly clears the mist, revealing The Ice Blob—a shapeless creature about the size of a laundry hamper, resembling "a water droplet on a leaf but transparent light blue and crystalline."

The blob appears to be made of viscous goo that "was freezing and breaking as it was moving. So the mist is definitely just...the environment reacting to this thing's presence." Through various investigations, the party determines the blob is not evil, not an animal, has no language or sentience that can be detected, and appears to be fleeing. Cat deduces it was likely startled by a bird and reacted out of fear, creating The Frozen Nilik through its defensive blast.

The party discovers the blob is attracted to popcorn, moving closer when Sucks throws it into the mist. Through Spellslaying and aided investigation, Safia and Sucks determine the blob has a finite crystalline mass that is hyper-cold, likely more so because it's scared. The party attempts various forms of communication without success, as the blob has no mouth or apparent way of speaking.

Safia connects to the blob using Safia's AI Implant, experiencing "the equivalent of scanning for Bluetooth." The reading indicates the blob is trying "to avoid a threat right now." Through this connection, Safia determines "this thing is collection of many small things that was at one time connected to the network of some sort of company."

The party makes camp on the side of the road with their cart, pigs, and the goo ball. The narrator notes: "And yet another traveler is added to the band of Sucks Benedict and others."

During the end-of-session questions, the group determines they learned something new about the world: "There's little blobs that are WI fi connectors." They also learned that Toxic Burning Goo can be used to clear mist. The party concludes that helping the terrified blob prevented it from "rolling around in the woods, terrified" where "it would be a huge issue."

Cat reaches 9 experience points and levels up, taking the Shoe move first, adding one to wisdom for a +1 modifier. After consideration, Cat chooses Divine Favor, gaining the Commune and Cast a Spell cleric moves. Shawn notes "you're considered a level one cleric. You get access to all of those level one spells" and adds "I've never actually had a spellcaster in a game of Dungeon World before."
