Details

The nilik presents several unusual characteristics that distinguish it from natural freezing. The vegetation at the site was flash-frozen, with bushes becoming so brittle they resembled glass. Huge ice crystals formed throughout the area, and frost blanketed everything—a striking anomaly given the otherwise temperate weather of pumpkin season.

Cat examined the temperature differential at the site to estimate when the freezing occurred, determining it was recent. As Cat explains: "hey, guys, do you want to go on an adventure? Also it might be dangerous because cat steps out of the nilik and is like, compares the temperature differential and is like, I feel like it couldn't have been that long ago otherwise it would have. Unless it was really cold, would have melted more." This analysis established that the freeze happened not long before the party's arrival, narrowing the timeline of whatever caused it.

Session 4

The nilik serves as the starting point of the party's investigation in Session 4. After Cat examines the temperature differential to establish the recent timing of the freeze, the party decides to pursue the trail leading away from the site.

Monster successfully picks up a scent trail at the nilik and tracks it away from the frozen hollow. "And one side of the nilik stands at the top of the hill and starts trotting away from the road, like into the wilderness." This trail leads the party through the wilderness toward The Frozen Waterfall, where their investigation continues.
