Commune
Summary
Commune is a cleric move in Dungeon World that enables a character to prepare divine spells through communion with their deity. The move requires spending uninterrupted time—approximately an hour—in quiet communion, during which the character loses any previously granted spells and receives new spells of their choice. The prepared spells' levels cannot exceed the character's own level plus one. In Session 4, Vasso gains access to this move as part of the Divine Favor advanced move, establishing a direct connection with the Earth Mother and gaining the ability to prepare divine magic.
Details
Commune functions as the spell preparation mechanic for characters who have gained divine spellcasting abilities. The process requires quiet, uninterrupted communion lasting roughly an hour, during which the character connects with their deity. Upon completing the communion, any spells previously granted are lost, and the character selects new spells to prepare.
The spell selection is governed by a level restriction: a character can prepare spells whose total levels do not exceed their own character level plus one. For Vasso at the time he gains this ability, this means preparing two first-level spells per session. The move grants flexibility in spell selection—rather than permanently choosing which spells to know, the character can change their prepared spells each time they perform communion. As one participant notes during the session: "Oh, of course. I can choose every time."
Commune is paired with the Cast a Spell move, which governs the actual use of prepared spells during play. Together, these two moves form the core mechanics of divine spellcasting in Dungeon World. When Vasso selects Divine Favor, the rules explicitly state: "So you gain the commune and cast a spell. Cleric moves."
History
Session 4
Commune enters the campaign when Vasso takes the Divine Favor advanced move and dedicates himself to the Earth Mother. The move is explained in detail during character advancement: "When you spend uninterrupted time an hour or so in quiet communion with your deity, you lose any spells already granted to. You are granted new spells of your choice whose levels don't exceed your own level plus one."
The practical application is clarified for Vasso's current character level: "You can prepare two spells a day from level one, and you get access to all of the road spells." This establishes that Vasso can prepare two first-level spells each time the move is performed, with the flexibility to change which spells are selected each session rather than committing to permanent choices.
