Summary

And now we have coins, but we also have a field of pumpkins that we could maybe harvest."

The group discusses inventory management, with Abdul questioning: "Who took those coins? Who's holding them? I feel like Vasso is the one that holds all our loot." Shawn clarifies the pumpkin harvest: "Oh, you smashed up the pumpkins and got 200 coin worth of their seeds." A lone figure approaches on the road. Shawn narrates: "You see a lone figure wandering down the road." Over the din of the party wrestling with sweaters, a voice calls out: "Now, what's this? Am I interrupting something?"

The Wandering Traveler introduces himself and offers help: "It's nice to meet fellow travelers. Is there anything going on here that I can help with, perhaps?" Nick Silver provides crucial information about New Smoke: "Oh, it's quite a situation up there. They're. You know, it was bad before with the food shortages, but some fairly rough folks seem to have place under new management. They're shaking people down pretty good going in and going out. As long as you're comfortable giving up the lion's share of whatever you're transporting."

Nick Silver explains his own safety: "It's hard to take things from a man with nothing." He also reveals knowledge of a secret way into New Smoke through dried up old canals that were once aqueducts, with a cage used for smuggling.

Nick Silver demonstrates unexpected control over Goober: "If you know how to talk to these things, they can be quite useful." When asked about Felix Thoughtomation, Nick Silver claims "not that I can recall"—but Safia's social interaction program detects he's lying. Safia also notices: "The connectivity field that you get off Goober, you're all getting off of his staff."

The Attack and Paralysis

As Nick Silver begins to leave, Cat's paranoia escalates. Shawn narrates: "Cat pulls out her bow and does a cold shot onto his head." The arrow slices through Nick Silver's ear. Nick Silver responds: "What the fuck is wrong with you?"

Cat attempts to restrain Nick Silver with sweaters but fails spectacularly, being thrown to the ground and taking 2 damage. When Cat protests, "ow, I'm a child," Nick Silver responds angrily. Sucks attempts to grab Nick Silver's staff with a dolphin dive but "collapses and he scorpions into the dirt."

Vasso invokes I Am The Law to stop Nick Silver, successfully forcing him to pause and defend his actions: "You attacked me. Unprovoked, you just attacked me. Well, your friend did. Could have died. What did you expect me to do?"

As Sucks emotionally accuses Nick Silver of lying and betraying their trust while crying, Nick Silver loses patience: "And he goes, enough. And he taps his staff on the ground. And all four of you freeze in place." Unable to move or speak, the party watches helplessly as Nick Silver lectures them: "And now I am going to leave." During the paralysis, Shawn notes that Sucks "pisses himself" involuntarily.

Safia's Investigation

Once Nick Silver is at a distance, Safia attempts to hack Nick Silver's Staff using Communion of Whispers, rolling a 10 and receiving a clear and helpful vision. Shawn explains: "He did it sort of the same way that you do it with your implant. Like he just connected with it and then went through its like, file directories and got it to produce a PI for him."

Shawn further clarifies the mechanism: "What he did is similar to what Goober does in that it seems like he activated some sort of swarm of similar machines in the air around you that altered the density of like, the air molecules to keep you in place." The session concludes with an after-credits scene showing Nick Silver sitting by a fire in the woods, healing his ruined ear perfectly: "He's sitting there. He's sitting in the woods around a small fire with his staff leaning up against the log and he puts his hand up to his ear, his bloody ruined ear. He brings it back down and it's perfectly knitted together."

The party discusses Bond Resolution and Experience Points. Erin states: "I don't think this time Nick Silver was kind of unnatural. We didn't eliminate him, though. We convinced him to leave through annoying him." Someone adds: "Yeah. I feel like you failed an aim, Erin."

  • Dayna reflects: "You tried to kill somebody just because he was leaving. I feel like I. I kind of am aware now that Katniss is a loose cannon kind of."
  • Abdul adds: "Katniss is a brave soul. I have much to learn from them. But you know how I had to interfere with Katniss arrowing a random man?"

The group discusses what they learned: "Did we learn something new and important about the world? That there's Nanites Everywhere. Also about Dr. Felix. That it's a woman. Woman doctor. That's crazy to me about the other part of Felix. We got log files. Yeah, we got. We got log files. Like getting a technomancer's, like, activity log."

For overcoming enemies, the group jokes: "Did we overcome a notable monster or enemy? We overcame the Sweaters."

Level-Up: Sucks' New Moves

Sucks receives guidance on selecting new moves. Shawn explains Balance: "So say like, you're in a fight. Yeah. Say you get in a fight with a dog, and the dog bites you. You get one balance and then you get stuck. So say you turn into a bear. I want to take plus one to my strength."

Abdul suggests Underdog: "But underdog is when you're outnumbered. You have plus one armor, which is also very sucks." Shawn agrees: "Better at getting his asking. Yeah. That seems more like sucks."
