New Smoke Gang Takeover
Summary
In Session 6, the party received critical intelligence about their destination from The Wandering Traveler they encountered on the road. New Smoke, already struggling with food shortages, had fallen under the control of what the traveler described as "fairly rough folks" who established "new management" over the settlement. This gang was actively extorting travelers, demanding "the lion's share of whatever you're transporting" from anyone entering or leaving. The news posed a direct threat to the party's mission to sell their valuable cargo of pumpkin seeds (worth 200 coins) at the settlement, which lay approximately one day's travel ahead.
Details
The situation came to light when Cat asked the wandering traveler about conditions in New Smoke. The traveler painted a grim picture: "Oh, it's quite a situation up there. They're. You know, it was bad before with the food shortages, but some fairly rough folks seem to have place under new management." He clarified that the new rulers were "shaking people down pretty good going in and going out."
When pressed for specifics, the traveler explained the gang's methods: "I mean, as long as you're comfortable giving up the lion's share of whatever you're transporting." He demonstrated his own survival of the checkpoint by showing he had nothing to take: "Oh, it's hard to. It's hard to take things from a man with nothing. They. They saw my. They saw my shirt, they saw my trousers, saw my stick, and told me to get on my way."
Sucks immediately framed the situation in binary terms, asking: "What's the situation? Is this like a we try and work for them kind of situation, or is it like we try to fight them?" This response rejected any consideration of surrendering the cargo and established that the party would need to choose between confrontation or collaboration with the gang upon arrival.
The revelation created immediate tension within the group as they processed the threat to their trading expedition and their personal safety at a settlement now only one day away.
