Nick Silver's Staff
Summary
Nick Silver's Staff is a sophisticated technological device that functions as a remote control for machines and technology. Carried by Nick Silver as a walking staff that extends just above where his ear used to be, the device emits a connectivity field identical to the Bluetooth-like signal produced by Goober. In Session 6 of the campaign, Safia's investigation revealed the staff's true nature: it operates through nanite swarms that can manipulate air molecules and interfaces with technological entities through wireless communication. The staff is registered to Dr. Doranelle Felix, a middle-aged woman with short blonde hair and glasses, rather than to Nick Silver himself, raising questions about how he came to possess it.
Details
The staff serves as Nick Silver's primary interface for controlling technology. When Nick Silver claims to have "a way with the machines," he physically demonstrates this connection by pressing his hand to Goober while holding the staff, allowing him to silently command the robot to transform and produce a pumpkin pie. During these demonstrations, Nick Silver moves his hands conspicuously on the staff while attempting to appear casual, inadvertently drawing more attention to the device.
The staff's technological capabilities include:
- Connectivity Field: Emits the same type of wireless signal that Goober produces, allowing it to interface with compatible machines
- Silent Communication: Enables Nick Silver to navigate machine file directories and issue commands without verbal input
- Nanite Control: Can activate swarms of nanite-like machines in the surrounding air
- Molecular Manipulation: The nanites can alter the density of air molecules to create paralysis effects
- User Authentication: Contains ID information and a user registry system
Safia's successful Discern Realities roll (10) revealed that the connectivity field the party receives from Goober is actually coming from Nick Silver's staff. Further investigation through Safia's Communion of Whispers ability (rolling a 10) uncovered the staff's nanite-based operation and its registration details. The ID portrait on the staff shows a middle-aged woman with short blonde hair and glasses, identified as Dr. Doranelle Felix, not Nick Silver.
History
Session 6
In Session 6 of the campaign, Nick Silver's staff became the subject of intense scrutiny when he demonstrated his ability to control Goober. While claiming to have "a way with the machines," Nick Silver moved his hands noticeably on the staff, attempting not to draw attention to it but achieving the opposite effect through his conspicuous casualness.
Safia succeeded on a Discern Realities check, discovering that "the connectivity field that you get off Goober, you're all getting off of his staff." This revelation established that Nick Silver was not communicating with Goober through verbal commands: "You talk to him, but not with your words."
When Nick Silver tapped the staff on the ground to freeze the party in place, Safia used Communion of Whispers to hack into the device, rolling a 10. The hacking revealed that the paralysis effect worked through nanite swarms: "What he did is similar to what Goober does in that it seems like he activated some sort of swarm of similar machines in the air around you that altered the density of like, the air molecules to keep you in place."
The investigation also uncovered how Nick Silver controls Goober: "He did it sort of the same way that you do it with your implant. Like he just connected with it and then went through its like, file directories and got it to produce a PI for him."
Most significantly, Safia's hack revealed the staff's registered owner: "There is an ID on it, but you name is not a name you recognize. There is a picture, like a small portrait accompanying it. That is not him." The portrait showed "a middle aged woman with short blonde hair and glasses," with the name Dr. Doranelle Felix attached to the registration.
