Vasso Witnesses Active Freezing
Summary
In Session 4 of the campaign, Vasso discovers that the freezing phenomenon affecting The Frozen Forest is actively ongoing rather than a past event. After Monster loses the trail at a frozen river, Vasso grows suspicious of potential ambush based on his commune experience with village boys hiding in trees. Taking out his sword and shield defensively, he uses the Discern Realities move, rolling a 9 modified to 10 with Safia's meal bonus. He chooses to learn what he should be on the lookout for, and witnesses a tree 200-300 feet ahead freeze right before his eyes, with ice climbing in spikes off the bark from unbelievable cold. This observation confirms both the active nature of the threat and that the party is following whatever causes the freezing rather than being followed, establishing a critical tactical advantage.
Details
The event unfolds when Monster loses the trail at the frozen river in The Frozen Forest. Drawing on his experience at the commune, where "boys from the village would sometimes come in and hide up in the trees and throw rocks at us while we were guarding the wall," Vasso becomes suspicious that someone is "about to prank us." He takes out his sword and shield in a defensive posture.
Vasso then uses Discern Realities to investigate the area, rolling a 9 that is modified to 10 by the bonus from Safia's meal. With a 10+ result, he selects the question "what here is useful or valuable to me?" — specifically asking what he should be on the lookout for.
The GM describes what Vasso observes: "You see a tree. Not right on the edge of the forest, but a little further in, you see the top of a tree freeze right in front of you. Right before your eyes." The freezing is dramatic and immediate — "the ice begins to climb, like, in these spikes off the trees. Like, it's just an unbelievable cold."
Based on this observation, Vasso understands two crucial facts. First, the party is "following a trail" — they are pursuing whatever causes the freezing. Second, "based on the fact that you saw this tree freeze in the forest, like, now two or 300ft ahead of you, you're following it. It's not following you. So you are in, like, the sneak position."
Participants
- Vasso — Used Discern Realities to investigate the area and witnessed the active freezing
- Monster — Lost the trail at the frozen river, prompting the investigation
- Safia — Previously provided a meal that gave Vasso a +1 bonus to his roll
- Dayna — Present with the party
Consequences
- Intelligence gained: The party confirms that the freezing effect is actively ongoing rather than a past phenomenon, narrowing the time window for tracking its source
- Location identified: The source of the freezing is approximately 200-300 feet ahead of the party's position, deeper into The Frozen Forest
- Tactical advantage: The party establishes that they are pursuing the source without it knowing they are there, giving them "the sneak position" for any potential encounter
- Mechanical effect: Vasso's successful Discern Realities roll (10+) provided actionable intelligence that shapes the party's approach to The Frozen Waterfall investigation
