Summary

The Ice Blob Investigation was a prolonged encounter during Session 4 of the campaign in which Cat, Safia, Sucks, and Vasso tracked and attempted to understand The Ice Blob, a mysterious crystalline creature radiating extreme cold. After wandering through the Misty Forest for 15-20 minutes in rapidly dropping temperatures, the party employed multiple investigation techniques including Detect Evil, Spellslaying, Hunt and Track, and attempted Communion of Whispers. The investigation revealed the blob to be a neutral, non-hostile creature approximately the size of a laundry hamper, made of freezing viscous goo, that had likely reacted defensively after being startled by a bird. The party discovered the creature was attracted to Popcorn but possessed no language or means of communication.

Details

The investigation began as the party pursued the creature through the forest, wandering for approximately 15-20 minutes through increasingly dangerous conditions. The temperature dropped rapidly as evening approached, creating a situation where, as described in Session 4, "This isn't like, ooh, it's getting chilly because the sun's going down. It's like something is here. You're. You're in danger."

Unable to locate the creature through conventional means, Sucks attempted to clear the mist by spraying Toxic Burning Goo in a circle around the party and igniting it. The plan backfired spectacularly when the fire "goes up in a huge puff of flame," requiring Cat to Defy Danger. Cat rolled poorly, taking 3 damage and having eyebrows singed in the blast. However, the massive burst of flame briefly cleared the mist, revealing "like a shape low to the ground in the mist, like just on the outside of this thing before the mist starts to roll back in."

The revealed creature appeared as a laundry hamper-sized mass of crystalline freezing goo. Vasso immediately employed Detect Evil, determining that the blob registered as completely neutral: "You get no evil vibes off this thing. Nor do you get good vibes. You get totally neutral vibes."

Safia attempted to use AI translation capabilities to communicate with the creature but found it possessed no language whatsoever. Cat tried Communion of Whispers (wild empathy) but achieved no success. The party then conducted an aided Spellslaying attempt, with Safia and Sucks working together to analyze the blob's physical nature and emotional state. They deduced the creature was likely scared rather than aggressive.

Cat employed Hunt and Track to reconstruct the events leading to the creature's flight. The deduction revealed: "You think that based on how skittish whatever this blob thing is and what you remember of the nilik and it. The sort of state of it and the directional blast of this gold. You think if you had to guess purely based on the information that you had is this thing was startled by a bird in a bush and just reacted out of fear and then ran away."

The party discovered the blob's attraction to Popcorn when Sucks threw kernels toward it. The creature moved closer through the mist to consume the food, demonstrating responsiveness to external stimuli despite its lack of communicative ability. Multiple attempts at verbal communication failed as the creature possessed no apparent mouth or method of speech.

Throughout the investigation, the party observed that the blob radiated extreme cold from its crystalline mass, creating the surrounding environmental mist as a byproduct of its presence. The creature's behavior patterns suggested it was fleeing rather than attacking.
