Ability Scores
Summary
Ability Scores are one of the core mechanical foundations of Dungeon World, representing a character's natural aptitudes across six categories: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Each score generates a modifier that applies to various actions and moves. The system follows standard conventions, where scores of 8-9 grant a +0 modifier, 10-11 grant +0, 12-13 grant +1, 14-15 grant +1, 16-17 grant +2, and 18 grants +3. During Leveling Up, characters may increase one ability score by one point, potentially changing their modifier. Ability scores can be increased to a maximum of 18.
Details
When a character levels up in Dungeon World, they select one ability score to increase by one point. As Shawn explains: "You increase one of your stats by one point, this may change your modifier." The key distinction lies in understanding that not every increase affects the modifier—characters need to cross certain thresholds to gain mechanical benefits.
The modifier progression operates on a two-point system. Scores of 8-9 both grant +0, meaning a character must reach 10 to potentially see improvement (though 10-11 still grants +0). The first meaningful positive modifier appears at 12-13 (+1), with the next tier at 14-15 (also +1). A significant jump occurs at 16-17 (+2), and the maximum modifier of +3 requires reaching the cap of 18.
The highest achievable score is 18, which Shawn confirms when asked: "18 means you get a plus three." This creates strategic choices during character advancement, as players must decide whether to push a score toward the next modifier threshold or diversify their improvements across multiple abilities.
History
Session 3
The party's level-up process in Session 3 demonstrated various outcomes of ability score increases. Katniss increased Strength from 8 to 9, changing the modifier from -1 to 0. Sucks increased Strength from 15 to 16, gaining a significant boost from +1 to +2. Safia increased Dexterity from 12 to 13, improving from +0 to +1.
Vasso increased Intelligence from 9 to 10, which led to a discussion about the value of such increases. Shawn noted: "So 9 to 10, unfortunately, doesn't change your modifier. You're on your way." This highlighted how some increases provide immediate mechanical benefit while others represent progress toward a future threshold.
A brief confusion arose about the maximum score when Abdul asked whether 16 was the cap. Shawn clarified that the maximum is 18, and confirmed that reaching 18 grants a +3 modifier, the highest available in the system.
