Leveling Up
Summary
Leveling Up is the character advancement process in Dungeon World where players increase their character's capabilities upon accumulating sufficient Experience Points. The mechanic uses a scaling requirement: characters need experience points equal to 7 plus their current level (8 XP for first level, 9 XP for second level, and so on). Upon leveling up, players make two specific choices: adding +1 to one of their ability scores, which may increase the associated modifier if the stat crosses certain thresholds; and selecting one advanced move from their class's level 2-5 options or potentially multiclassing.
The stat modifier calculation follows a specific structure: 8 is -1, 9-12 is 0, 13-15 is +1, 16-17 is +2, and 18 is +3. Ability scores can be increased up to a maximum of 18, which grants a +3 modifier. This means a character can increase a stat without necessarily gaining a mechanical benefit if the new value remains within the same threshold range. The system rewards both failed rolls and character relationship development through Dungeon World's core experience mechanics.
Details
The leveling process in Dungeon World follows a structured sequence. When Shawn identifies that the party is ready, stating "Which means that you're almost certainly ready to level up," the players must make strategic choices about their character development.
Each player follows the same steps:
- Verify they have experience points equal to their current level plus 7
- Subtract the required XP from their total
- Increase one ability score by one point
- Select one advanced move from their class options
As Shawn explains: "You increase one of your stats by one point, this may change your modifier." The maximum ability score is 18, though there was brief confusion when Abdul suggests "You top out at 16," which Shawn corrects to "18."
For the stat increase, the mechanical benefit depends on whether the increase pushes the stat into a new modifier bracket. A character with 13 Constitution (a +1 modifier) who increases it to 14 maintains that +1 modifier, as both values fall within the 13-15 range. However, increasing from 15 to 16 would improve the modifier from +1 to +2, providing a tangible mechanical benefit to all moves and abilities that reference that stat.
The GM offers house rules allowing multiclassing options at levels 2-5 and 6-8, expanding the standard advancement choices available to players.
History
Session 3
At the end of Session 3, the entire party reaches level 2 simultaneously. Shawn asks "Do we want to level now or do we want to level later?" and Abdul responds "Let's level now." Shawn congratulates the group: "All right. Well, that we've leveled up. We leveled up for the first time, everybody. Well done."
Each party member makes distinct advancement choices:
- Katniss increases strength and takes Wild Empathy
- Sucks increases strength to 16 (+2 modifier) and takes Cheap Shot
- Safia increases dexterity to 13 (+1 modifier) and takes Communion of Whispers
- Vasso increases intelligence
The session concludes with Shawn and the players celebrating their achievement: "Yeah, good job. And good job tonight. What a great. What a great session."
Session 6
At the conclusion of Session 6, the group reviewed character experience totals and discovered that multiple characters had reached the threshold for advancement. Safia accumulated sufficient Experience Points to level up, prompting the observation that "Safia has enough to level up, I think." Sucks also qualified for advancement, though this surprised at least one participant who remarked "How do you have so many?" The response—"They failed a lot, I guess"—highlights how Dungeon World's failure-based experience system can lead to rapid advancement for characters who frequently attempt difficult or risky actions.
The Game Master established the procedure for handling the leveling, stating "We'll go through and see if anybody else does and then. Yeah, we'll level you up." Erin then engaged in the advancement process for Safia, considering options including the Balance move and consulting with Shawn about the available choices. The session revealed the scaling XP requirement formula: participants confirmed the calculation that advancement requires "7, plus your current level" experience points, meaning second level requires 9 XP total.
Session 7
During the end-of-session bookkeeping, Shawn checked whether any characters had accumulated enough XP to level up. When asked about the requirement, Shawn clarified: "Seven. Plus your current level, so probably 10." This confirmed the scaling formula where characters need 7 XP plus their current level to advance.
Cat came frustratingly close to the threshold with 9 XP but needed one more point to reach the required 10 for level 4, responding "Ah, damn it" upon realizing they were just short. The session also referenced Safia's recent advancement from the previous session, where Safia had selected the Balance move as their new ability. Shawn confirmed this choice during the bookkeeping: "What move did you take? Oh, balance. You took balance?"
Session 11
In Session 11, multiple characters leveled up after accumulating sufficient Experience Points. Sucks leveled up to level 5, and his advancement choices were discussed in detail at the table. For his stat increase, Sucks chose to add one point to Constitution, raising it from 13 to 14. While this maintained his +2 modifier rather than improving it, the choice reflected a desire to increase survivability. The session featured a brief clarification when someone asked, "Okay, so you get to add one to your stats, or is it two?" with the response confirming, "No, it's one."
For his move selection, Sucks chose the Connections move. The session also highlighted a participant's observation about the level-up mechanic being "the one thing" about Dungeon World that requires clarification, specifically regarding how stat modifier calculations work across the different threshold ranges.
