Safia Reveals Her Shapeshifting

Summary

In Session 3, while Vasso, Sucks, and Katniss are trapped behind a portcullis in the Caverns beneath the Rex Tree, Safia makes the critical decision to reveal her shapeshifting abilities. As a giant bat clinging to the ceiling, she swoops down and tears the dog mask off one of the Dog-Masked Cultists, exposing an ordinary middle-aged man with olive skin and a mustache. Her bat screeches echo through the caverns, triggering an ominous rumbling from deeper in the tunnels and causing the terrified cultists to flee. With her Shapeshift hold expended, Safia transforms back to human form in front of her companions for the first time, using a dramatic corkscrew transformation that causes Sucks to vomit and Vasso to scream. After freeing her trapped friends by opening the portcullis, Safia must confront the revelation that her secret is now exposed.

The aftermath forces Safia to explain her abilities to the shocked party. Katniss attempts to preserve the deception by claiming Safia is "the Echo Lord," while Vasso has a delayed reaction that causes him to drop his stolen food in shock when he remembers what he witnessed. Safia explains that where she's from, people have relationships with animals that allow them to become those animals for short periods. This revelation also exposes the mutual blackmail arrangement between Safia and Sucks—he knew about her abilities all along because she was keeping his secret: that he hit on her while she was in a shapeshifted animal form.

Details

The revelation begins when Safia, in giant bat form, attacks one of the cultists threatening her trapped companions. The GM describes the moment: "Daphne sneaks down on that one and, like, is huge, right? So grabs onto the front of them and is beating wings wildly and grabs onto the mouse with her little bat claw." She seizes the cultist's dog mask and tears it off. The GM narrates: "And you grab this dude's dog mask and yank it off his face. And everybody gasps in awe as you realize you don't know who this guy is."

The unmasked cultist panics: "And he covers his face and he goes, no. And he covers his face and he goes, wait a second. None of you know who I am. But then he. No, wait. Actually, what he says is, holy. A giant bat starts flailing his arms around and freaking out."

Safia then uses Echolocation, creating loud screeching sounds that reverberate through the cavern. The GM describes: "So the bat starts making these gerbil noises that it uses to echolocate. And it's surprisingly loud in this cavern." The sounds echo deeper into the tunnels where Vasso, Sucks, and Katniss are trapped: "So this shrieking sound echoes throughout the cavern and then echoes out down through the tunnel and sucks Vasso and Katniss deeper in the darkness. You hear a rumbling." The terrified cultists flee up the ramp.

With her Shapeshift hold expended, Safia must transform back to human form in full view of her companions. The transformation is described in vivid detail: "It's definitely an Animorph style. And she has to do kind of a turn. Like, it's almost like twisting out of the skin of that thing." The GM continues: "So there's the bat twists in the air and as it does, arms and legs sprout out of this gigantor body and become your friend."

The party's reactions are immediate and visceral. The GM describes: "Safia sucks puke. Sasso immediately screams." Katniss attempts damage control, telling the others: "Look guys, don't panic. I mean we kind of need to panic, but we'll talk about this later. We just gotta get you out of here. There's something behind you." Safia splashes water through the portcullis to get their attention and warns them about the approaching threat.

After successfully opening the portcullis and escaping the immediate danger, the party confronts what they witnessed. Vasso experiences a delayed reaction—initially forgetting about the transformation in the chaos, then suddenly remembering while eating stolen food and dropping his meal in shock. Katniss responds pragmatically, asking whether Safia can turn into other animals like moles to help them escape.

Safia explains the nature of her abilities: where she's from, people have relationships with animals that allow them to become those animals for short periods of time. She admits she hasn't told them everything about her past before joining the group.

The revelation also forces Sucks to expose their mutual blackmail arrangement. He reveals he knew about her abilities all along because she was keeping his secret—that he hit on her while she was in a shapeshifted animal form.
