Party Discovery by Cultists

Summary

In Session 2 of the campaign, the party attempts to infiltrate the Underground Tunnels Beneath Rex Tree using a stacked formation with Cat leading due to superior stealth abilities. They successfully reach an observation point overlooking a cavern where five robed cultists wearing copper animal masks perform rituals around a food-laden altar. When Vasso attempts to use Discern Realities to identify whether these cultists are members of his long-lost religious family, he catastrophically fails the roll with a result of 4. The failed move causes stone to break loose from the earthwork, sending Vasso tumbling halfway through the hole where he becomes stuck at the hips, fully exposed to the cultists below. All five cultists immediately turn to face the suspended Vasso, ending the party's attempt at stealth.

Details

The party descended into the Underground Tunnels Beneath Rex Tree using what was described as a "Scooby Doo style" stacked formation, with Cat's stealth abilities allowing the group to move quietly through the underground passage. They reached a position where they could observe the cavern below, seeing five robed figures with copper animal masks gathered around an altar laden with food.

Vasso became curious about the cultists' identities, stating: "I'm very curious and I'm trying to squint and stare at the people to see if I can see some of my long lost family members." This prompted a Discern Realities roll to determine whether these cultists might be connected to Vasso's religious past. The roll resulted in a 4—a clear failure in the Dungeon World system.

The GM described the consequence: "you, like, lean a little bit further into this little gap and whatever chunk of stone you were resting one of your hands on comes loose from the earthwork." Vasso's position deteriorated rapidly as "you basically end up halfway through this hole, like, hanging down, your legs get stuck. Like your hips and legs get stuck in this crack."

The stone clattered down into the cavern below, creating noise that immediately drew attention. "The rock clatters down and all of the robed figures whip around to look at you," concluding the party's covert observation and leaving Vasso suspended and exposed before the assembled cultists.
