Alignment

Summary

Alignment is a core character mechanic in Dungeon World that defines each player character's moral compass and behavioral tendencies. Each character possesses one of five alignments—good, chaotic, neutral, lawful, or evil—paired with a specific directive that describes how that alignment manifests for that particular character. At the end of each session, players review whether they fulfilled their alignment's directive during play. Successfully living up to one's alignment awards Experience Points that contribute to character advancement.

The mechanic ties character development directly to roleplay choices, rewarding players for making decisions consistent with their stated moral framework rather than simply tracking combat victories or treasure acquisition.

Details

In Dungeon World, alignment functions as both a character trait and an Experience Points (XP) trigger. Each alignment comes with a unique condition that must be met during the session. When reviewing the End of Session Questions, the first step is examining whether each character fulfilled their alignment directive.

The five alignments and their general orientations are:

  • Good — focused on protecting others and self-sacrifice
  • Chaotic — centered on freedom, breaking constraints, and spontaneity
  • Neutral — concerned with balance and eliminating threats to natural order
  • Lawful — emphasizes rules, codes, and societal structures
  • Evil — prioritizes self-interest and harming others

Each character's alignment includes a specific condition tailored to their class and playstyle. For example, Vasso's good alignment requires "I endanger myself to protect someone weaker than me," while Katniss's chaotic alignment rewards "freeing someone from literal or figurative bonds." Sucks's chaotic alignment has a different requirement: "leap into danger without a plan." Safia's neutral alignment requires "eliminating an unnatural menace." These specific directives ensure that alignment fulfillment feels meaningful and distinct for each party member rather than generic.

The alignment system appears during end-of-session review, when the group evaluates whether their actions during the session met their alignment's requirements, earning XP if they did. Shawn emphasized the system's purpose as both "something to think about" and "a way to play your character," encouraging players to consider ways they might play into their alignment to earn experience. The mechanic can emerge organically from character choices rather than requiring deliberate planning.

The fulfillment criteria can be strict. Simply attempting the action may not be sufficient—the attempt must be successful enough to claim the XP. Similarly, driving off a threat rather than eliminating it may not satisfy a directive that requires elimination. However, Shawn exercises interpretive flexibility—acknowledging that alignment conditions can be satisfied through unconventional means when actions achieve the spirit of the directive, even if they don't match the most literal reading.

Players present their case for whether they fulfilled their alignment during each session, and Shawn makes the final determination of whether the condition was met. If approved, the player marks one experience point on their character sheet.

History

Session 3

During the end-of-session review in Session 3, each party member successfully fulfilled their alignment requirements.

Vasso's good alignment directive is "I endanger myself to protect someone weaker than me." During the session, Vasso's protection of both Monster and Sucks qualified as fulfilling this alignment, earning the character experience points.

Katniss's chaotic alignment rewards "freeing someone from literal or figurative bonds." The character fulfilled this directive by freeing The Sniff Lord, demonstrating the alignment's focus on liberation regardless of the freed individual's nature.

Safia's neutral alignment focuses on "eliminating an unnatural menace." The character satisfied this requirement by identifying and exploiting The Sniff Lord's pressure point weakness, leading to the creature's elimination.

Sucks's chaotic alignment directive rewards "leaping into danger without a plan." The character demonstrated this throughout the session by recklessly entering the dark cavern and charging into the goose-infested room without preparation or strategy. Brad, who plays Sucks, acknowledged during the session that he "didn't know alignment fulfillment was a mechanic" until the moment when his character freed the Sniff Lord, though his actions had satisfied the alignment requirement through other reckless choices.

The alignment review preceded the other End of Session Questions, including whether the party looted memorable treasure—which they did not, as the group clarified: "Yeah, we didn't loot anything. We repossessed things that we're going to give back to the owners." This distinction between looting and repossessing demonstrates how the campaign's moral framework extends beyond the formal alignment system into the group's broader approach to treasure and property.

Session 4

During the end-of-session review, the party evaluated their alignment conditions following their investigation of the frozen nilik and encounter with Thunk, a gelatinous creature.

Sucks Benedict reviewed his chaotic alignment condition—"Leapt into danger without a plan"—and counted running into the woods during the session's events as fulfilling this requirement. Safia considered her neutral alignment for the Druid, which requires her to "eliminate an unnatural menace." Shawn ruled that the party's befriending of Thunk counted as eliminating an unnatural menace, reasoning that neutralizing the threat through befriending achieved the alignment's intent rather than requiring literal destruction. Cat examined her chaotic alignment requirement to "free someone from literal or figurative bonds" and counted helping free Thunk from "the figurative bonds of loneliness" as fulfilling her condition, demonstrating the flexible interpretation the system allows.

Vasso reflected on his good alignment, which requires him to "endanger myself to protect someone weaker than me," and evaluated whether he had met this condition during the session.

Session 5

During the Gordian combat encounter, each character's alignment was checked and confirmed as fulfilled. Sucks fulfilled "Leap into danger" by charging into the Gordian's field. Abdul reported checking this alignment as soon as the decision to run into the pumpkin field was made, expressing relief that it matched the character's drive.

Safia fulfilled "Eliminate an unnatural menace" through participation in the Gordian's defeat, though the player noted the character's relatively passive role in the elimination. Vasso fulfilled "Endanger yourself to protect someone weaker than you" by charging to protect companions during the encounter. Cat fulfilled "Free Vasso from literal bonds" by cutting the vine that was holding Vasso.

All four characters earned experience points from their alignment fulfillment during this session.

Session 6

During the end-of-session review, the party evaluated their alignment moves to determine who earned experience points.

Safia reviewed her alignment move: "eliminate an unnatural menace." She concluded she had not fulfilled it, noting that while Nick Silver might have been "kind of unnatural," the party did not eliminate him. As she observed, "We convinced him to leave through annoying him." Safia expressed disappointment with her performance, stating: "To be frank, like, Sapia feels kind of like she really missed this today."

Vasso considered his alignment move: "endanger myself to protect someone weaker than me." He determined he had not successfully fulfilled it, explaining, "I needed to endanger myself to protect someone weaker than me. And I don't. I mean, I tried to, but, like, I don't know." The attempt alone was not sufficient to claim the XP.

Katniss successfully claimed alignment XP. She had freed Sucks from literal bonds during the session by helping Sucks escape from the sweaters.

Sucks reviewed his Chaotic alignment move: "leap into danger without a plan." He successfully claimed this XP for running at Nick Silver without a plan during the earlier confrontation in the session.

Session 7

At the conclusion of Session 7, the group conducted their alignment review. Abdul confirmed that Sucks had fulfilled his alignment by kicking open the manhole cover without knowing what was on the other side, clearly leaping into danger without a plan. Erin determined that Safia had not confronted an unnatural menace during this session. Dayna established that Vasso had achieved his alignment by protecting Safia while she was transformed into a pigeon, endangering himself to protect someone weaker. Brad noted that freeing Monster's nails from the tent—the only potential alignment trigger for his character—did not count as freeing someone from a literal bond, and therefore the alignment was not achieved. This ruling demonstrated that the mechanic requires a strict reading of the alignment condition rather than metaphorical or creative interpretations.

Session 8

The alignment review occurred at the conclusion of Session 8, with Shawn initiating the end-of-session questions by addressing alignment first. Each player presented their case for whether they had fulfilled their alignment condition during the session.

Sucks Benedict (played by Abdul) claimed alignment XP for his Chaotic requirement to "leap into danger without a plan." Abdul argued: "I guess I went on that date with pretty much not a lot of plan," referencing Sucks's unexpected romantic entanglement during the session.

Vasso (played by Dayna) successfully claimed her Good alignment XP for endangering herself to protect someone weaker. Dayna confirmed: "Oh, yeah, I think I did that," and her claim was accepted without dispute.

Cat (played by Brad) attempted to claim alignment XP for his condition to "free someone from literal or figurative bonds." Brad argued: "I freed Sucks from the bond of not having a date." However, Shawn rejected this interpretation, ruling: "Nope. See, that's—you pushed Sucks into the bond of having to go on a date." This exchange demonstrated Shawn's role in adjudicating whether a player's actions truly fulfilled their alignment condition, and highlighted how the system requires genuine adherence to the alignment's intent rather than creative reinterpretation of events.

Session 9

At the end of Session 9, the party reviewed their alignment goals to determine who earned experience points. Sucks Benedict achieved his chaotic alignment by using transformative goo, with Shawn confirming: "Chaotic leap into danger without a plant. Yeah. With that goo. Yeah. Unquestionably." His impulsive use of the dangerous substance qualified as leaping into danger without planning.

Cat also earned alignment experience by freeing Yassandra from her role as a swineherd. Cat argued: "Cat free someone from little or figurative bonds. I freed that guy from the bonds of swineherdership. Legit." Shawn accepted this as a valid fulfillment of Cat's good alignment condition.

Safia did not achieve the neutral alignment goal during the session. When reviewing "Eliminate an unnatural menace," Shawn concluded: "Not quite. I don't think."

Vasso similarly did not meet the good alignment condition. The goal to "endanger yourself to protect someone weaker than you" was not fulfilled, with Vasso's player noting: "I don't think I did that this time."

Episode: "Session 11"

The alignment mechanic appeared during the end-of-session experience point distribution. Shawn initiated the review: "So we'll start with some end of session stuff. Do alignment real quick."

Sucks confirmed fulfilling the alignment "leap into danger without a plan," noting "I did that a lot" over the course of the session. Safia achieved the alignment "eliminate an unnatural menace" by dealing with the AI entity encountered during the session. Vasso successfully completed "endanger yourself to protect someone weaker than me," having done so at least once during play. Cat accomplished "free someone from literal or figurative bonds" by helping untie the mayor. All four characters earned their alignment-based experience point for the session.
