Summary

The party's emergence from the caverns occurs in Session 3 after hours of navigating the maze-like tunnels beneath the Rex Tree. Following a fresh air stream through The Underground Cavern Complex, the group reaches a passage blocked by a tumble of rocks, with light and air visible beyond. Safia's attempt to safely remove stones and create an escape route fails catastrophically, triggering a collapse that injures both Safia and Vasso. The party emerges into the nighttime forest having consumed nearly all their ritual food during the underground journey.

Details

After extensive travel through the tunnel system beneath the Rex Tree, the party locates an exit passage blocked by fallen rocks. Light and air filter through gaps in the pile, indicating proximity to the surface. Safia examines the arrangement of stones to determine which can be moved without triggering a collapse.

When Safia attempts to shift what she believes is the correct rock, the move goes wrong. As one participant describes: "And she moves it wrong. And all of the rocks at the top that you were trying not to dislodge become dislodged." The collapse injures both Safia and Vasso with falling debris.

The failed rock-moving attempt draws comment from the group. "Safiya, I thought you knew how to roll or Move rocks," someone remarks. Safia's response to the injury is pronounced—she cries overwhelmingly, and the transcript notes "She's crying overwhelmingly," with the explanation that "she's not good at pain."
