The Perilous Journey Through the Caverns

Summary

In Session 3 of the campaign, the party organized an escape attempt from the underground tunnel system beneath the Rex Tree. Using the Undertake a Perilous Journey move, Vasso served as trailblazer (assisted by Sucks carrying equipment), Safia scouted ahead wearing The Dog Mask, and Katniss managed their supplies as quartermaster. The journey succeeded but took longer than expected due to Vasso's partial success on navigation. By the time the party completed their trek, they had consumed nearly all the ritual food offerings taken from the altar chamber, leaving only about one day's worth of food for one person.

Details

The party prepared to navigate the cavern system after Safia discovered a fresh air trail while scouting. The GM explained the mechanical framework: "So what we're going to do here is an undertake a perilous journey. So you need a quartermaster. I assume that you'll, like, pile up on whatever foods you can bring with you." The group organized their roles, with Katniss managing their food supplies, Vasso leading navigation, and Safia scouting ahead through the tunnels.

The party loaded up on the ritual offerings they had found in the altar chamber. The GM described the abundance: "You guys aren't used to having such a delicious variety of foods. There's fruit, cheeses, meat, bread, or, like juice." The variety and quality overwhelmed the party members. Sucks made a fashion choice during the preparation, placing a wrapped Kraft single cheese slice in his T-shirt pocket like a pocket square.

Safia scouted ahead wearing The Dog Mask, which provided synesthesia-based sensory input. While exploring, Safia identified the fresh air trail and reported: "And you notice that. Yeah. On the right hand tunnel, there appears to be a quick moving stream of what you would assume to be fresh air, as if it's flowing from an opening of some kind." During the same scouting run, Safia also discovered a dangerous Purple Ooze leaking from the wall in a different tunnel.

Vasso rolled a partial success on the trailblazer move, which meant the journey succeeded but took additional time. Sucks helped by carrying equipment, reducing the physical burden on Vasso. The GM narrated Safia's experience: "Safiye, you're scouting ahead, creeping through these tunnels, trying to follow this trail of fresh air that you've been following."

The extended journey depleted the party's food supply. The GM summarized the outcome: "Overall, you guys did pretty well on that. Like, you basically eat all your food. Like you have. You have maybe a day's worth of food for one person left by the time you get out of here."
