Discovery of the Purple Ooze

Summary

In Session 3 of the campaign, while navigating underground tunnels using The Dog Mask, Safia encountered a dangerous environmental hazard: a viscous purple liquid oozing from a crack in a stone wall. The crack appeared to have been eaten away by something corrosive, and the substance created an overwhelming smell that, when viewed through the mask's synesthetic vision, manifested as a gray cloud that stung Safia's eyes and mouth. The liquid reminded Safia of toxic waste from The City, leading to speculation that a satellite facility might exist near Rex Tree. After warning the party away from the hazard and observing Katniss test the liquid's properties with a dead fish, the group collected a sample and avoided the route where the ooze flowed downslope into a separate tunnel system.

Details

While scouting ahead with the synesthesia mask, Safia detected a pungent odor emanating from a different corridor than the fresh air trail she had been following. Upon investigation, she discovered a crack in the stone wall from which "this viscous purple liquid" was "pouring out of the wall." The crack itself "seems to have been eaten away by something," suggesting corrosive damage to the stone.

When Safia attempted to examine the substance more closely through the mask's synesthetic vision, the overwhelming smell created a sensory overload. The GM described the effect: "Yeah, it's just your whole vision clouds with this. Like, I'm not even sure what color it would be. Like, gray almost. The smell, it's just so strong, and it's clouding your whole vision, and it, like, it stings your eyes and mouth to get to. To get close to it."

The liquid formed "a thick stream flowing down a slope into a different part of the tunnel system," creating a separate path from the fresh air route. Recognizing the danger, Safia immediately called out to her companions: "Guys, don't come this way."

The substance triggered a specific memory for Safia, as it "reminds her of the toxic waste ledge of her blasted homeland." This association led her to suspect the presence of a City satellite facility in the area.

When the rest of the party arrived, Katniss speculated that the substance might be hot sauce based on how it stung the eyes, and suggested that Sucks should taste it to confirm. Sucks refused, still harboring resentment from an earlier social slight: "Now you think it's cool to talk to me, even though before, when I showed you my sick pocket square. You snubbed me like I was a piece of shit. You eat that hot sauce piece of shit."

Katniss proceeded to test the liquid's properties by dipping a dead fish into it, discovering that the liquid possessed surprising viscosity that caused it to grip onto objects rather than simply dripping off. When the fish was subsequently dropped into the pool of ooze, Monster (the pet fish) was attracted to it and had to be physically grabbed to prevent her from swimming into the dangerous liquid.

Despite the hazard, Sucks collected some of the substance in his 2-liter Coke bottle, marking off adventuring gear to do so. The sample became known as Purple Sludge. Safia warned the party not to linger near the toxic substance.
