Description
The City is described as "a pretty metropolis kind of place" that suffered a catastrophic nuclear event. The disaster contaminated the environment with toxic waste to the point that fish would drop dead into it, though the inhabitants "would pretend it was water." This toxic contamination was widespread enough to affect the local ecosystem significantly.
The City's infrastructure extended far beyond its metropolitan core. Its people established satellite operations in distant locations, creating a distributed network of technological advancement. In Session 3, Safia makes a critical discovery while exploring the tunnels beneath The Rex Tree. She encounters what she identifies as pure toxic waste—the same substance that devastated her homeland. She recognizes it immediately: "This is what was happening to all the fish in my homeland. They're just dropping into the toxic waste."
This discovery prompts a revelation about the City's true scope. The discussion establishes that the City's inhabitants "didn't all just live in the city"—instead, "a lot of people left. They'd go and they'd open up facilities or schools or offices." These satellite operations were where people would "work on their technology or whatever" and where they would "innovate and sell things and advance the technology."
The presence of this toxic waste near The Rex Tree leads to a significant conclusion: "You think this could be evidence that there is one such place near Rex Tree."
