Summary

Kat is a player character controlled by Brad in the campaign. A 16-year-old who was raised by cats for a portion of her life, Kat possesses the extraordinary ability to understand all languages, including animal languages, but has absorbed very little about human culture beyond language itself. In Session 8, Brusque describes her as "the ragged teen, who appears to have grown up beneath some sort of pier," establishing her rough, street-hardened appearance.

Despite her cultural gaps—she previously believed all mayors were pigs because every mayor in the fiction she has read extensively was depicted as one—Kat demonstrates exceptional archery skills, stealth capabilities, and tactical thinking throughout the campaign. She serves as a scout for the party in Session 5, taking on advance reconnaissance duties alongside Sucks and Monster. She proves outspoken and quick to question authority, particularly when it comes to commercial matters, and possesses unusual encyclopedic knowledge about cow pies and their mysterious properties.

History

Session 5

During the session, Kat scouts ahead with Sucks and Monster, maintaining a distance of approximately half a mile from the rest of the party. While the other scouts handle practical matters, Kat takes on a different responsibility, as noted: "Kat will worry about the future."

The journey provides an opportunity for Kat to educate Sucks about cow pies. When questioned about their origin, Kat explains that "they're usually just left on the ground. No one knows where they come from." This attempt at explanation leads to further confusion when Sucks asks about the similarity between cow pies and pumpkin pies. Kat's diplomatic response—"Not very. But I guess it depends what you feed the cow"—suggests either genuine uncertainty about the relationship between diet and pie quality, or a patient willingness to entertain Sucks's line of questioning.

Throughout the scouting mission, Kat remains separated from the main party, operating in the advance position alongside the other scouts while maintaining a contemplative focus on long-term concerns.

Episode: "Session 8"

During the party's visit to the New Smoke Market, Kat engages in a pointed exchange with Brusque about his business practices. When the merchant priest attempts to present himself as commercially savvy, Kat challenges him directly, stating "I just want to make sure you understand how marketing works." This comment greatly offends Brusque, establishing tension between the pragmatic teen and the self-important merchant priest.

Kat serves as the party's practical conscience, reminding them of loose ends they've left behind. She points out that they "left Goober down in the hole so that no one would find him" and that they abandoned their cart outside. This attention to detail contrasts with what appears to be the party's tendency to move forward without securing their resources.

At the market, Kat arrives with 25 gold to spend. She inquires about items in a specific price range, asking "Hey, do you have anything for sale that's worth 45 coins or more? For 45 coins or less," showing her careful approach to shopping. She also contributes business suggestions to Brusque, proposing that he sell pies at his cart, though she undermines this suggestion by muttering "Not with your handshakes" in reference to his poor greeting abilities.

Episode: "Session 11"

Kat continues her role in the party's infiltration of the Thunderhogs' underground facility, demonstrating both combat prowess and tactical creativity. Early in the session, she discovers a blue access card and attempts an experimental approach to understanding its properties, touching it to the red card she already possesses. When questioned about this unusual method, she explains her understanding: "If there's one thing Cat knows, it's that magic isn't linear. And those sound increases seemed linear."

During a tense corridor encounter, Kat showcases her exceptional archery skills with a non-lethal solution. Rather than following Sucks' suggestion to shoot an approaching guard in the head, she executes a precise trick shot—pinning the guard's foot to the concrete floor by shooting an arrow through his shoe. The guard trips and knocks himself unconscious attempting to move. After the successful shot, Kat quips with characteristic humor: "Thanks. I was aiming for the butt." She contributes to analyzing The Wasteland Map and suggests securing the room containing unconscious guards, showing practical thinking about operational security.

As the party plans their deeper infiltration, Kat proposes alternative strategies, asking "What if instead we blend in as prisoners?" She also demonstrates concern for Monster's inclusion in any disguise plan: "This is never gonna work. How are we gonna find a little striped outfit for a kitten?" While exploring the barracks, she connects discovered guard uniforms to costumes found earlier in the facility. Throughout the mission, Kat shows growing awareness of her companions' personalities, protectively shushing Sucks when Safia needs thinking time and perceptively asking Vasso, "Sucks. Just wants to give a speech, doesn't he?"

During critical moments, Kat provides both physical and tactical support—kicking Vasso in the shin to help make his voice impersonation more convincing, and deploying Monster as a distraction in The Assembly Hall to help the party reach The Dressing Room. After successfully rescuing The Mayor of New Smoke, Kat makes an introduction that reveals her evolving understanding of government: "Mayor, meet Katniss. He is not a pig"—updating her previous belief that all mayors were pigs based on her extensive fiction reading.
