The Portcullis Revelation
Summary
The Portcullis Revelation is a crucial moment in Session 2 where the party discovers a fundamental flaw in their imprisonment by The Cultists. After being sealed in the sacrifice chamber by a wooden portcullis, the group takes a closer look at their supposed prison and realizes the bars are spaced five feet apart—wide enough for any of them to simply walk back through. Despite this absurd design flaw rendering the portcullis functionally useless as a physical barrier, The Cultists treat it as binding according to their ritual rules. The revelation occurs at the session's conclusion, leaving the party with an obvious escape route that their captors apparently don't expect them to use.
Details
The revelation unfolds after The Cultists have already sealed the party—including Rex Tree, Vasso, Sucks, Katniss, and Safiya—inside the sacrifice chamber with Monster. Upon closer inspection of their confinement, the GM reveals a critical detail about the wooden portcullis: "If you now that you take a second look, they're actually like way too big. They're like five feet. The holes are five feet wide. So you could probably just walk back through."
This discovery transforms what The Cultists clearly intended as an inescapable prison into a laughably permeable barrier. The five-foot spacing between bars is more than sufficient for a person to pass through unobstructed. However, the ritual logic governing The Cultists' behavior creates an unexpected complication. When the possibility of simply walking back through is raised, The Cultists respond with: "wait, no, that's sick. It's the rules." Their objection stems not from the physical impossibility of escape, but from the violation of their ritual protocols.
The timing of this revelation—occurring at the very end of Session 2—leaves the situation unresolved, with the party now aware they possess an escape method their captors may not have properly accounted for beyond appeals to "the rules."
Participants
- Rex Tree — One of the party members sealed in the sacrifice chamber
- Vasso — One of the party members sealed in the sacrifice chamber
- Sucks — One of the party members sealed in the sacrifice chamber
- Katniss — One of the party members sealed in the sacrifice chamber
- Safiya — One of the party members sealed in the sacrifice chamber
- Monster — Also confined in the chamber with the party
- The Cultists — The captors who erected the portcullis, bound by their ritual rules
Consequences
- The party gains knowledge of an escape route that requires no special abilities or tools—simply walking through the oversized gaps
- The physical effectiveness of The Cultists' containment system is revealed to be entirely dependent on ritual compliance rather than actual structural integrity
- A potential conflict is established between the physical reality of the situation (the portcullis cannot actually contain anyone) and The Cultists' ritual framework (which treats the portcullis as binding)
- The session ends on this discovery, leaving the question of whether the party will exploit this design flaw unresolved
