Pumpkin Catapult Creature
Summary
The Pumpkin Catapult Creature is a hostile guardian encountered by the party in Session 5 within the Money Pumpkin Field. The creature appears as a decomposed, soggy pumpkin with a mouth and eyes split into the pumpkin flesh, animated by fat, stubby vine tendrils that function as both weapons and grappling appendages. Positioned in the middle of the cultivated clearing approximately 50-60 feet from where the party enters, the creature serves as the primary reason the valuable Money Pumpkins have remained largely undisturbed. It demonstrates tactical intelligence, assessing threats and targeting intruders who attempt to harvest the pumpkins it guards.
The creature remained dormant until Sucks attempted to pull a pumpkin from its vine, triggering its defensive response. Vasso's investigation revealed that "whatever is in the middle of this field might be the reason that the pumpkins haven't been disturbed to a greater degree." The creature's malevolent nature was confirmed through Vasso's prayer to the Earth Mother, and it proved unresponsive to Cat's attempt at animal communication.
Appearance
The creature presents as a small, decomposing pumpkin with distinctive features carved or split into the rotting flesh — a mouth and eyes that give it a grotesque semblance of a face. Despite its diminutive central body, the creature commands considerable reach through its fat, stubby vine tendrils. These appendages appear deceptively short but can extend far beyond what their stocky appearance suggests, stretching across the pumpkin field to ensnare opponents or hurl projectiles.
When active, the creature's vines whip around like tentacles, described by one party member who screamed out "pumpkin catapult" upon witnessing its attack method. The tendrils are strong enough to lift whole pumpkins, wrap around them, and launch them through the air with considerable force and accuracy. The vines also function as grappling weapons, capable of snaking out to grab and drag victims through the field.
History
Session 5
The Pumpkin Catapult Creature first became apparent when the party entered the Money Pumpkin Field. Vasso noticed early that something in the middle of the field might explain why the pumpkins remained unharvested despite their value. The creature remained still and hidden among the pumpkins until Sucks made an attempt to pull a pumpkin from its vine.
Upon this provocation, the creature launched its first attack. One of the pumpkins rose up with a stocky vine wrapped around it, then "just gets whipped through the air," sailing toward Cat and Sucks. When Sucks successfully dodged the thrown pumpkins, the creature changed tactics and sent a snaking vine to grab him directly. The creature successfully ensnared both Sucks and Vasso, dragging them through the pumpkin field.
Cat engaged the creature with archery, successfully severing one of its vine tendrils with an arrow, though the creature appeared to retain additional appendages for continued combat. The creature demonstrated tactical awareness throughout the engagement — when Sucks went down, it moved forward, but when it assessed the rest of the party, it held its position.
Vasso's prayer to the Earth Mother confirmed the creature's malevolent nature, and Cat's attempt to communicate with it as an animal failed, suggesting the creature either lacks the intelligence to communicate or is fundamentally hostile to intruders regardless of diplomatic overtures.
