Saffron Mask

Summary

The Saffron Mask is a detection device used by the party in Session 7 of the campaign. The mask enables its wearer to detect odors and assess environmental conditions, particularly useful for investigating potentially hazardous areas. Dayna initially carried the mask in her sack before it was retrieved for use at the Underground Drainage System.

Properties

The Saffron Mask functions as a sensory enhancement tool. When worn, it allows the user to determine the presence or absence of dangerous odors in the surrounding environment. According to Shawn's description, when the mask is activated, the wearer can distinguish between harmless stale air and actively hazardous substances such as sewage. The device operates without requiring the user to make any mechanical checks—Brad receives confirmation that he does not need to roll dice to use the mask.

The mask has significant physical weight and size, making it unsuitable for very small creatures. When Kat attempted to place it on Monster the kitten, the tiny cat was "crushed under the weight of the mask" and could not function while wearing it. After this failed experiment, Kat placed the mask into Sucks Benedict's Bjorn carrier for transport.

History

Session 7

The party retrieved the Saffron Mask from Dayna's sack when investigating the canal entrance to the Underground Drainage System. The group needed to verify whether dangerous fumes or active sewage posed a threat before entering. When someone wore the mask, Shawn confirmed: "if you pop the mask on, you can see that there's no horrible odors. Like, there's definitely a stale stench coming out of the grate, but it's not like active sewage."

Kat attempted to have Monster use the mask, presumably to send the small animal ahead as a scout. The attempt failed immediately—"Monster does nothing. Monster is crushed under the weight of the mask." The kitten proved too small to support the device. After this unsuccessful test, Kat stored the mask in Sucks Benedict's Bjorn carrier, where it remained accessible to the party.
