Summary

The Cultist Confrontation and Ultimatum occurred in Session 2 of the campaign when The Masked Cultists discovered Vasso, Cat, and Sucks spying on their ritual beneath the Rex Tree. After Vasso attempted to charm the cultists by complimenting their masks and claiming he heard about a tree-loving sect having a feast, the horse-masked cultist declared him an interloper and presented an ultimatum: immediate death or wandering the caverns. Cat immediately chose the caverns, and when Sucks demanded explanations and tried to negotiate, one cultist drew a knife and threatened oblivion, forcing the party's compliance. The cultists revealed their order was "not entered so lightly" but suggested those who returned unharmed from the caverns might be considered for membership, unknowingly sending the party into what would become a sacrifice to The Sniff Lord.

Details

The confrontation began when five masked cultists approached the party after discovering them observing the ritual. The horse-masked cultist spoke first through the mask in a tinny voice, declaring:

"You have stumbled upon something you should not have. Interloper."

Vasso attempted to defuse the situation through charm, complimenting their masks and claiming he had heard about a tree-loving sect having a feast. He offered his dead goose as a contribution to what he assumed was a celebration. The horse-masked cultist ignored the attempt at deflection and presented the stark choice:

"You end your life now or you wander the caverns."

Cat did not hesitate, immediately stepping forward and announcing the choice of the caverns. The dog-faced cultist provided minimal explanation, stating only that "this meeting should not be viewed by any who are not a part of our organization."

Vasso became excited by the confrontation, believing this might be an opportunity to join a religious family like his own and avoid his arranged marriage. Meanwhile, Sucks took a confrontational approach, demanding the cultists explain everything they had witnessed before the party would enter the tunnels.

The cultists refused to negotiate. One cultist clarified:

"Our order is not one entered so lightly."

The cultist added that if the party returned from the caverns unharmed, "perhaps" they might be considered for membership. When Sucks continued to argue and resist, one cultist drew a knife and asked:

"would you like to know oblivion?"

This direct threat ended the negotiation, forcing the party's compliance with the ultimatum.
