Vasso's Moral Crisis
Summary
Vasso's Moral Crisis occurs in Session 3 after Vasso successfully subdues the Sniff Lord. Upon examining the bound creature up close, Vasso confronts the moral weight of capturing what appears to be a victim of failed experimentation. The Sniff Lord's body defies biological logic, and its blind, milky-white eyes show only fear. Vasso recognizes that the creature exists in a state of suffering, understanding the world solely through smell and sound with no conception of its situation. This realization moves Vasso to tears and prompts Dayna, the player, to cry as well. Vasso nearly releases the creature out of sympathy, but when it thrashes violently and headbutts the cavern wall, the party recognizes it must remain bound despite its pitiful state.
Details
After the combat ends and the Sniff Lord lies subdued, Vasso examines the creature closely and his perspective shifts dramatically. Shawn describes the creature's condition: "You look at it and you look into its eyes and you see like. No, like you just kind of see fear. Right? Like it is this blind monster that lives in this tunnel. The only conception it has of its surroundings is smell and sound. It doesn't even know what's going on right now."
The creature's physical form disturbs Vasso. Shawn notes, "It's a real pathetic looking. Like it looks like its body, like, because its body just doesn't make sense. It just looks like it even being alive is like an inconvenience for this thing." Vasso begins to question his actions, stating: "Like, I mean, should I. It's real bad. Should I have done this? I don't know. And I starting to cry a little bit, but like it's so sad and it looks like my great, great, great, great grandpa uncle."
The emotional weight of the moment affects both the character and the player. Vasso cries in character while Dayna begins crying in real life. Vasso seriously considers releasing the creature: "Oh God. I don't know, guys. Like, I feel bad. Should I untie it? Should I untie it? I'm starting to cry a little bit in real life now."
The crisis resolves when the Sniff Lord flops violently and headbutts the cavern wall with thunderous force. This display of dangerous strength confirms that despite its pitiful state, the creature cannot be safely released. Vasso recognizes the moral complexity: the party has captured something that is neither fully person nor fully animal, a victim of experimentation that remains a genuine threat.
Participants
- Vasso — The party member who captures the Sniff Lord and experiences the moral crisis upon recognizing the creature's suffering
- Dayna — Vasso's player, who becomes emotionally affected by the scene and cries along with the character
- Sniff Lord — The blind, suffering creature whose pitiful state triggers Vasso's crisis of conscience
- Shawn — The GM who narrates the Sniff Lord's condition and describes its fear and biological impossibility
Consequences
- Vasso gains a deeper understanding of the moral ambiguity inherent in the party's dungeon exploration—not all dangerous creatures are simply monsters to be defeated
- The party recognizes that the Sniff Lord is a victim of the experimentation occurring in the tunnels, neither fully responsible for its actions nor safe to release
- The emotional weight of the encounter establishes that creatures in this campaign can exist in states of suffering that complicate simple combat resolutions
- Vasso must live with the decision to keep the creature bound despite recognizing its fear and pain, accepting that mercy and safety cannot always align
- The session establishes a precedent for examining the moral implications of the party's actions beyond tactical success
