The Missing Ritual Book
Summary
The Missing Ritual Book is an object that the party believes should be present in the ritual chamber where the Sniff Lord ritual was conducted. In Session 3 of the campaign, Katniss detected the scent of leather and paper in the area, prompting a search for what appeared to be a book. Both Katniss and Vasso attempted to locate the book using the Discern Realities move, but both failed their rolls. The GM confirmed that the book is absolutely not in the altar chamber, leaving its whereabouts unknown. The search held particular significance for Katniss, who has an affinity for books.
Properties
The book's physical properties are known only through Katniss's olfactory perception. The scent detected includes leather, suggesting a bound cover, and paper, indicating the book's pages. No visual confirmation of the book exists, and its actual appearance, size, contents, or purpose in the ritual remain undetermined. The connection to the Sniff Lord ritual suggests the book may contain ritualistic information or instructions, though this remains speculative.
History
Session 3
While investigating the altar chamber where the Sniff Lord ritual had been conducted, Katniss detected the scent of leather and paper, leading to the question: "Hey, do you see the scent of leather and maybe paper anywhere?" This prompted Vasso to join the search, as one party member noted, "Katniss does bring up a good point, though. Is anybody looking to see if the book is around here?"
Both Katniss and Vasso attempted Discern Realities rolls to locate the book. The GM noted that "Katniss has kind of an affinity for books," making the search personally meaningful. However, both searches failed, with the GM stating, "Because I don't think there's a book here." The GM then confirmed: "Doesn't look like the book is here. You each mark a point of experience. But I will say that, yeah, the failure, at least right now, is that the book is absolutely not in this room."
The book's location and whether it exists at all remains an unresolved mystery at the end of Session 3.
