Vasso's Divine Vision and Canal Navigation
Summary
In Session 7, when the party becomes lost in the grid-patterned Underground Canal System beneath New Smoke, Vasso successfully casts his Guidance spell for the first time in the campaign. After receiving encouragement from Sucks Benedict, Vasso clasps his hands, presses his thumbs to his wooden circlet, and prays to his deity. Rolling a partial success (10 after Abdul's help), Vasso experiences a mystical vision where green motes of light coalesce into the pictogram of a tree enclosed in a circle—a symbol representing his deity. The glowing symbol floats through the canal system, leading Vasso in a trance-like state to a metal ladder and manhole cover that provides the party's escape route. The successful spell-casting significantly improves Vasso's emotional state, though it imposes a minus-one penalty to future spell casting until he communes with his deity.
Details
Lost in the canal maze, the party faces disorientation in the underground passages. Sucks Benedict attempts to encourage Vasso, punching him in the shoulder while expressing admiration for his divine abilities. Vasso responds by clasping his hands together and pressing his thumbs to his wooden circlet to pray.
Dayna describes the casting: "So you try your damnedest. What does it look like when Vaso prays?" As Vasso concentrates, Shawn narrates the divine response: "And you feel your body becomes very aware of the. Where the circlet is touching your skin." The sensation intensifies as "motes of green light begin to coalesce in front of you. They take the form of. Of a simplified pictogram that Vassa is very familiar with of a tree with a circle enclosing it."
The glowing tree symbol begins floating forward through the canal. Without speaking to the others, Vasso immediately stands and follows the vision, keeping his hands clasped and hood down. From the perspective of the other party members, Shawn notes: "Vaso suddenly stands to his feet and starts walking down the canal." Vasso remains in this trance-like state as the symbol guides him through several turns in the maze.
The vision leads the party to a freestanding metal ladder positioned in the middle of the canal, which extends up to a manhole cover. Upon reaching the ladder, the tree symbol bursts into many different motes of green light that slowly fade away, and the sensation from Vasso's circlet disappears. Exhausted but elated, Vasso holds onto the ladder to rest. Dayna explains Vasso's emotional state: "Vasa is going to hold on to the ladder and just kind of like relax a little bit because he's feeling a little tuckered out, but so happy. I think that fixed his depression a lot."
