Properties

The brooch takes the form of a small butterfly with wings filled in with colored glass arranged in intricate lines. Despite appearing alive when examined closely—beginning to flap and fly around autonomously—it is not an actual living creature but rather jewelry enchanted with a simple simulacrum of life.

Under normal circumstances, this type of item would be worn on clothing, with the butterfly flapping around the wearer before periodically landing back on their garment, functioning as a living decorative accessory. When the party examines it in the locker, the butterfly flies around within the confined space.

Later in the session, after the party encounters The Masked Cultists and becomes trapped in the Underground Cavern Beneath Rex Tree, the brooch becomes the party's only source of light in complete darkness. The butterfly continues flying around in the confined tunnel space. Its illumination proves barely adequate—the party can see each other's faces but cannot see far enough ahead to navigate safely. The group discusses the possibility of sending the butterfly forward as a scout, which they could follow through the darkness by tracking its dim light.
