Spellwright
Summary
Spellwright is the term for a type of artisan from Safiya's unnamed civilization of origin who specializes in creating enchanted jewelry. These craftspeople enchant decorative pieces with simple simulacrums of life, causing the items to move and behave as if they were alive while remaining fundamentally accessories meant to be worn on clothing. The animated decoration provides wearers with magical ornamentation that appears autonomous in its movements.
In Session 2 of the campaign, Safiya's childhood memories of Spellwright work allow her to identify the nature of the butterfly brooch she encounters, recognizing it as an enchanted decorative item rather than a living creature or device with more sinister purposes.
Details
Spellwright enchantment works by imbuing jewelry with what the GM describes as "a simple simulacrum of life." This enchantment creates pieces that move and act on their own while remaining decorative accessories. The items are designed to be worn on clothing, where they provide their wearers with animated decoration.
The craft represents a sophisticated magical tradition from Safiya's civilization, one she recalls from her childhood in what she remembers as "the wonderful shining civilization that you came from that remains unnamed." The technique produces items like the Butterfly Brooch, which flutters and moves as if alive while serving its primary function as wearable ornamentation.
Spellwright pieces are distinct from living creatures or surveillance devices—they are fundamentally magical jewelry rather than autonomous entities or tools of observation. This distinction proves important when Safiya examines the butterfly brooch and determines its true nature based on her knowledge of this artisan tradition.
History
Session 2
The concept of Spellwrights surfaces when Safiya encounters the Butterfly Brooch and draws on her memories to identify it. The GM explains: "You think back to your childhood in the. In the wonderful shining civilization that you came from that remains unnamed. And this looks very similar to the things that a kind of artisan called a Spellwright would make."
The GM further clarifies the nature of Spellwright work: "And it's basically just like a piece of jewelry that's been enchanted with a simple simulacrum of life." This knowledge allows Safiya to understand that the brooch is decorative enchanted jewelry meant to be worn rather than a living creature or a device meant for spying or surveillance.
