Spellslay
Summary
Spellslay is a move in Dungeon World used to investigate and understand mysterious phenomena through consulting reference materials and applying knowledge. The move is rolled using 2d6 plus the character's intelligence modifier, with additional bonuses possible from relevant resources such as books and environmental advantages. In Session 4 of the campaign, this move provides the mechanical framework for Cat's investigation of the frozen nilik.
The move appears to function similarly or identically to the standard Dungeon World move "Spout Lore," allowing characters to recall or research information about unusual situations, creatures, or magical effects they encounter.
Details
When a character attempts to understand something mysterious or arcane, they roll Spellslay using the following calculation:
- Base roll: 2d6
- Add intelligence modifier
- Add bonuses from relevant resources (such as the Bag of Books)
- Add situational bonuses (such as benefits from good meals or other preparations)
The move follows standard Dungeon World success tiers, where different roll results determine the quality and usefulness of the information gained. On a result of 10 or higher, the character learns something both interesting and useful about the subject of their investigation.
The move can be aided by other characters, which can modify the final result. The move represents a character's ability to combine book learning, practical knowledge, and analytical thinking to pierce through mysteries and understand supernatural or unusual phenomena. It emphasizes the importance of preparation and resources—carrying reference materials or ensuring the party is well-fed can provide crucial advantages when facing the unknown.
The move appears to involve both active consultation of physical books and the application of learned arcane principles to interpret observed phenomena.
History
Session 4
During Session 4, Cat uses Spellslay to investigate the frozen nilik. The GM explains the move's mechanics: "You could go ahead and roll a spell or two. D6 plus intelligence. Plus one from your book. Oh, plus one also from your delicious meal."
Cat's roll benefits from multiple bonuses: her base intelligence modifier, a +1 bonus from her Bag of Books, and an additional +1 from having eaten a delicious meal earlier. Cat also received aid from Sucks, which modified the roll. This stacking of advantages demonstrates how proper preparation and resource management can significantly improve a character's chances of success when attempting to understand dangerous or unusual situations.
Cat achieves a result of 10 on her Spellslay roll, allowing her to discover something both interesting and useful about The Frozen Nilik. The GM described the results: "Looking at like piecing things together, seeing its kind of shape you recall that, like, when you saw it for the second that you saw it, that it was, like, blob shaped, but it also looked kind of crystalline in the way that, like, ice was forming on the surface of it as it moved." The information revealed that the creature was composed of viscous goo that undergoes freezing and breaking as it moves, with ice crystallizing on its surface—information that proves valuable to understanding the mysterious phenomenon the party has encountered.
