The confrontation began when Vasso and Safia approached the Meat Party food stall in the New Smoke aftermarket. Two guards were already there demanding payment from the vendor. When Vasso questioned the guards' behavior, the Meat Party Vendor explained the new reality: "Yeah, it's just, you know, last couple weeks, you know, a bunch of. Bunch of thugs rolled in, took over the place."

The vendor described the violent takeover in stark terms: "Couple people got. A couple people got taken away. A couple stalls got smashed. You know, homes burnt, the whole thing." The gang had established complete control over all salvage distribution in New Smoke, and merchants now faced daily extortion.
