Dungeon World Experience System

Summary

The Dungeon World Experience System is the mechanic through which player characters advance in level by earning experience points (XP). Players earn XP by answering a series of end-of-session questions posed by the Game Master. Each affirmative answer to these questions awards one point of experience. To advance to the next level, a character must accumulate XP equal to 7 plus their current level.

The system features three standard questions: "Did we learn something new and important about the world?", "Did you overcome a notable monster or enemy?", and "Did we loot a memorable treasure?" This approach ties character advancement directly to story progression and discovery rather than tracking individual monster kills or quest completion.

When a character levels up, the player increases one stat by 1 and gains a new advanced move from their class playbook. Stat increases may or may not change the associated modifier, depending on whether the new value crosses a threshold from an odd to an even number.

Details

The experience system operates through a collaborative end-of-session review. Shawn poses each question to the group, and players collectively determine whether their actions during the session warrant an affirmative answer. The end-of-session questions begin after resolving any bond changes.

Each question addresses a different aspect of gameplay:

  • "Did we learn something new and important about the world?" — rewards information gathering and story discovery
  • "Did you overcome a notable monster or enemy?" — acknowledges combat achievements and conflict resolution
  • "Did we loot a memorable treasure?" — recognizes acquisition of significant or unusual items

Players receive exactly one point of experience per question answered affirmatively, regardless of how many examples they can cite. As Shawn clarified during Session 8: "If you can answer the question, you get one point of experience." Multiple instances of learning (such as discovering both the gang takeover and the merchant priests) still count as a single affirmative answer to the first question.

The advancement threshold increases with each level. A character must accumulate XP equal to 7 plus their current level before advancing. For example, reaching level 4 requires 10 experience points (7 + 3). This creates a steadily increasing experience requirement as characters grow more powerful.

When leveling up, players make two choices. First, they select one of their character's stats to increase by 1. This increase may change the stat's modifier if it moves the stat from an odd number to an even number, crossing a modifier threshold. As Shawn explained during end-of-session bookkeeping in Session 8, "the assign your stats numbers as base. 12 is 0, 13 is 1". The modifier calculation follows the pattern: 12 is +0, 13-14 is +1, 15-16 is +2, and so forth. This threshold-based calculation means that not every stat increase provides an immediate mechanical benefit. Second, the player chooses a new advanced move from their class playbook, expanding their character's mechanical capabilities.

History

Session 8

At the end of Session 8, the party applied the experience system to determine XP awards. After confirming no one wished to change their bonds, Shawn posed the first question about learning something new and important about the world.

The group identified multiple discoveries: Brad mentioned "There's a bean," Dayna referenced "The baddies," and Abdul noted "the merchant priests." These referred to the party's investigation of the gang takeover in New Smoke and their encounter with information about merchant priests. This earned the group one point of experience.

When asked if they had overcome a notable monster or enemy, the party did not claim this point, indicating no significant combat victories during the session.

For the question about memorable treasure, the group affirmed they had looted significant items. The session saw Vasso and Cat acquire unusual equipment from the New Smoke market, including dust hats, a circuit-enhanced halberd, armored shoes, and headphone equipment.

Dayna initially expressed confusion about the scoring: "Wait, did we get one or two points for meeting or from learning about the gang and the merchant guys." Shawn reiterated the rule that each question yields only one point regardless of how many examples qualify.

The two XP earned this session allowed both Vasso and Cat to reach the threshold for advancement to level 4. Shawn prompted the group during end-of-session bookkeeping: "Okay. Yeah. So you get a point of experience for that, and that is all of the experience. Anybody have enough experience to level up?"

Dayna confirmed "it's seven plus your level" before realizing Cat had reached the threshold for advancement. Brad confirmed Vasso would "go to level four".

Shawn walked the players through the advancement process: "Okay, so we'll start with Vaso. You increase one of your stats by one. This may change your modifier. It also may not". Vasso increased Dexterity and selected Bloody Aegis as the new advanced move. Cat increased Intelligence and selected God Amidst the Wastes as the new advanced move.
