Shoot First
Summary
Shoot First is a thief class move in Dungeon World possessed by Sucks Benedict. This ability grants its wielder the mechanical advantage of never being surprised and always acting first in any situation where initiative or action order is in question. The move represents a thief's quick reflexes and constant vigilance, providing mechanical permission to always have the advantage when determining who acts first in a scene.
In Session 5 of the campaign, Shawn clarifies the move's function when Sucks Benedict faces an incoming catapulted pumpkin: "Sucks Benedict. Has a thief move called shoot first, which means he's never surprised. He always gets to act first. If the. If there's ever a question of who gets to act for act first, it [belongs to] Sucks Benedict." During Session 9, the move's interaction with other mechanics becomes clearer when Abdul attempts to invoke it—while Shoot First allows a character to act first, it does not eliminate the need for successful rolls when the action itself requires overcoming danger.
Details
Shoot First operates as a passive ability that automatically triggers whenever there is uncertainty about action order. Unlike moves that require a roll or specific fictional positioning, this thief move grants Sucks automatic narrative priority. When a threat emerges or combat begins, Sucks is mechanically guaranteed the opportunity to act before others, regardless of whether he was paying attention or aware of the danger.
The move triggers during the pumpkin catapult incident, demonstrating that even when Sucks is distracted—in this case, discussing semaphore technique with Cat—the ability still functions. The move does not prevent attacks from occurring, but it does grant Sucks the chance to respond to them first. As Shawn notes during the session, "I mean, this is a whole lot of talking for having pumpkins sailing at your face," acknowledging that while the projectile is still incoming, Sucks's move allows him to react before impact.
The mechanical benefit translates to fictional permission: Sucks can attempt to shoot or throw a weapon at threats, interrupt ambushes, or otherwise seize the initiative in tense situations. The move's name suggests its most common application—shooting first in a confrontation—but its actual function is broader, applying to any scenario where someone might be caught off-guard or where turn order needs to be established.
- Interaction with Other Moves: Shoot First grants the right to act first, but actions taken still require appropriate rolls. During Session 9, invoking the move to grab transformative materials off Sucks Benedict still required a defy danger roll, which Abdul failed with a result of 4.
History
Session 5
Shoot First becomes relevant when a pumpkin launched from a catapult sails toward Sucks and Cat while they discuss semaphore signals. Despite being focused on their conversation and not watching for threats, Sucks's thief move activates. The player invokes the ability: "But as. As. As I'm advisor, so not to expose himself in a public place. I shoot first."
Shawn confirms the move's mechanics, explicitly stating how it functions and that Sucks gets to act before the projectile connects. Sucks uses this opportunity to attempt an offensive action against the incoming pumpkin, either shooting or throwing a weapon at it. The player reaffirms the action: "Hey, maybe it's from really far away. Anyway, I do shoot first."
This session demonstrates the move's utility in unexpected situations, showing how a thief's constant readiness provides a mechanical advantage even when the character's attention is elsewhere.
Episode: "Session 9"
During the fusion transformation crisis, Abdul attempts to invoke Shoot First, asking "Can I use shoot first?" when trying to act quickly to separate transformative goo and a branch from Sucks Benedict. Shawn confirms the move's applicability with "Oh, yeah, you could," but clarifies that using it in this context still requires Abdul to roll a defy danger check.
Abdul explains the intended action: "What do you shoot first to? Like, get it off of me." However, the subsequent defy danger roll results in a 4, a critical failure that leads to the permanent fusion rather than preventing it. This demonstrates that while Shoot First grants the mechanical permission to act first, it does not bypass the need for successful rolls when the action itself is dangerous or difficult—the move frames the timing and order of action, but the outcome still depends on other moves and their results.
Episode: "Session 10"
Shoot First saw creative application when Sucks attempted to ambush Thunder Hogs members who had seen through his feigned death. While lying on the ground pretending to be dead, Sucks planned to activate Shoot First by having his chest-mounted wooden stick extend outward as an improvised punching weapon. As Sucks described the intent: "And then I want to use shoot first. And my shoot first is that I attached the stick to my chest and I want it to come out and punch them in the face."
The GM ruled that this application of Shoot First would mechanically resolve as a Backstab move, establishing how the thief move interacts with Dungeon World's deception-based attack mechanics. Shawn stated "Then we will make Sucks the one leading this role," confirming that Sucks would be the primary actor in the resulting roll. This adjudication demonstrated that Shoot First positions Sucks to act first and grants advantageous positioning, but the specific mechanical resolution depends on the context—in this case, attacking from concealment triggered the Backstab framework rather than a standard combat move.
