Immortality
Summary
Immortality is a hereditary trait within Yassandra's family lineage, revealed in Session 9 of the campaign. This ability prevents family members from dying of old age, though they remain vulnerable to death by violence. The trait explains the unusual discrepancy between Yassandra's temporal age of 65 years and biological age of approximately 22 years.
The revelation came when Yassandra explained his age to the party, stating: "I've been trying to talk to you kids for like, 60 seconds. So, like, temporally I'm 65, but biologically I'm like 22." This information helped the party reconcile their decision to send him on a dangerous quest, with Kat specifically noting she felt better about Yassandra becoming a hero once she learned of his immortal nature.
Details
The immortality possessed by Yassandra's family operates under specific limitations. Family members do not age past a certain point and will not die from natural causes related to aging. However, this protection does not extend to physical harm—violence such as stabbing can still kill them.
Yassandra acknowledged that his experience differs from most people's, noting: "I should. Sorry. I realize that most people aren't immortal. I won't die of old age. Someone stabs me, I'll die for sure." This clarification establishes that while the family trait provides exceptional longevity, it does not confer invulnerability or protection from lethal injuries.
The biological implications mean that Yassandra has lived for over six decades while maintaining the physical condition of someone in their early twenties. This allows him to function as a young adventurer despite having accumulated more than four decades of additional life experience.
History
Session 9
The concept of immortality was introduced when Yassandra disclosed his family trait to the party. The exchange occurred when someone in the group identified the nature of his condition, stating "Oh, your family's immortal," to which Yassandra confirmed: "Oh, my family's immortal."
This revelation had immediate impact on how the party viewed their earlier actions. Kat, who had been involved in encouraging Yassandra to take up a heroic path, felt reassured by the knowledge that he possessed this advantage. The session notes record: "Kat feels better about this guy being a hero now that she's learned he's immortal."
The disclosure also served to explain Yassandra's unique temporal versus biological age situation, providing context for why someone who appeared to be in their twenties had actually been alive since before most of the party was born.
