Dexterity
Summary
Dexterity is one of the six core stats in Dungeon World, representing a character's agility, reflexes, and coordination. The stat is conventionally important for the Thief Class, as many thief moves rely on Dexterity for sneaking, picking locks, disarming traps, and performing acrobatic maneuvers. In Session 11, Dexterity became a topic of discussion when Sucks, despite being a thief, demonstrated a deliberate disregard for this traditionally essential stat, choosing not to increase it when leveling up and instead prioritizing Constitution.
Details
In Dungeon World, Dexterity governs moves that require finesse, speed, and physical coordination. For the Thief Class specifically, Dexterity typically serves as the foundation for signature abilities such as trap disarmament, lock picking, and stealthy movement. Characters with high Dexterity are expected to excel at these precision-based tasks.
However, Sucks's approach to the thief class subverts this expectation entirely. When offered the opportunity to increase Dexterity during level-up in Session 11, Abdul declined, stating plainly that the stat "doesn't really come in handy. Ever". This choice prompted surprise from Shawn, who remarked "No dexterity. Just none," highlighting how unusual it is for a thief to neglect their class's primary stat. The decision reinforces Sucks's characterization as a "big gangly thief" who succeeds through unconventional means rather than the finesse and agility traditionally associated with the role.
This deliberate choice creates a mechanical expression of Sucks's character: someone committed to a role for which they lack natural aptitude, yet who finds ways to succeed nonetheless.
History
Session 11
In Session 11 of the campaign, Dexterity became relevant during Sucks's level-up sequence. When presented with stat improvement options, Abdul chose to increase Constitution rather than Dexterity, despite playing a Thief Class character. This choice sparked a brief exchange where Shawn expressed surprise at the complete absence of investment in Dexterity, to which Abdul responded that the stat has never proven useful for Sucks's particular approach to thievery. The exchange reinforced the ongoing theme of Sucks as a "big gangly thief" who operates outside the conventional parameters of the class.
