Safia Identifies the Gordian

Summary

In Session 5 of the campaign, Safia deliberately positions herself to be splattered with the Gordian's chlorophyll goo while rushing to check on the wounded Sucks. By getting the substance on herself, she uses her AI implant to identify the creature attacking the party. Her Spout Lore roll (result of 8) reveals that the creature is a Gordian—a carnivorous plant that naturally inhabits patches of pumpkins, squash, or zucchini. This knowledge check provides the party with crucial tactical information about what they're fighting and explains why the Money Pumpkin Field is so exceptionally fertile.

Details

As the combat continues, Safia begins rushing toward Sucks to see if he's okay after being wounded. Rather than simply moving to help, she deliberately puts herself in the path of the creature's goo spray, hoping that direct contact with the substance will allow her AI implant to analyze and identify it.

The gambit works. Safia's player describes the tactic: "She also, like, kind of purposely gets in the way of the goo to get a little bit on, like, splattered or whatever, because she just wants to know what this stuff is. She wonders if she comes in contact with it, if she can somehow, like, you know, search her AI what the heck this is."

Safia rolls Spout Lore and gets an 8—a partial success that provides interesting information without immediate tactical advantage. The GM confirms: "You have never seen one of these before, but you've heard of them. They are natural."

The AI reveals that the creatures are called gordians, and despite their appearance, "they're not quite animals. They are more plants. They're like a carnivorous plant." The Gordian species typically lives inside patches of vegetables—"some look like pumpkins, some look like squash, some look like zucchinis"—camouflaging themselves to match the surrounding plants. They lie in wait in the middle of particularly lush patches, using their vine tentacles to kill whatever prey they can grab.

The information also explains the exceptional fertility of the Money Pumpkin Field: the gordians "kill whatever they can get a hold of, and then it decomposes into the fields and creates, like, a natural fertilizer." The very lushness that makes a patch attractive to potential prey is created by the decomposing corpses of previous victims.

Even the taste of the goo provides information. Safia notes it has a gamey quality, "like when you have, like, medicine and you're like, well, this kind of tastes like meat. But you can tell that it's been running a lot... It's like the pumpkin version of that. Like, it's a gamey pumpkin taste."

Participants

  • Safia — Deliberately exposed herself to the Gordian's goo and used her AI implant to identify the creature, providing the party with tactical knowledge about what they were fighting
  • Sucks — The wounded party member Safia was rushing to help when she executed her identification strategy
  • Gordian — The creature being identified; revealed to be a carnivorous plant species that creates fertile hunting grounds through the decomposition of its prey

Consequences

  • The party learned they were fighting a carnivorous plant rather than an animal, which affected their tactical understanding of the creature's behavior and vulnerabilities
  • The mystery of why the Money Pumpkin Field was so unusually fertile was solved—the Gordian had been killing prey and using the decomposing corpses as fertilizer
  • Safia gained knowledge about Gordian biology and hunting patterns: they camouflage themselves among the plants they resemble, lie in wait in lush patches, and use vine tentacles to grab and kill prey
  • The information established that gordians are naturally occurring creatures in this world, not magical constructs or aberrations
