Debility

Summary

Debility is a Dungeon World mechanic that represents a lasting negative condition affecting a character's abilities. In the game system, debilities reduce the relevant stat by -1 and include six conditions tied to the core attributes: Weak (Strength), Shaky (Dexterity), Sick (Constitution), Stunned (Intelligence), Confused (Wisdom), and Scarred (Charisma). Unlike temporary damage tracked through hit points, debilities persist until specifically healed or removed, making them a more serious consequence than simple HP loss.

Throughout the campaign, debilities have been applied as mechanical consequences of failed rolls and narrative circumstances, demonstrating how the system translates story events into ongoing mechanical effects. The Constitution debility applied to Sucks in Session 3 and the Strength debilities assigned to both Cat and Sucks in Session 6 illustrate how debilities directly connect to fictional circumstances and create lasting consequences that shape subsequent actions.

Details

A debility functions as a -1 penalty to one of the six core stats in Dungeon World. Because stats modify the results of moves (actions in the game), this penalty makes a character less effective at tasks governed by that attribute. Each debility persists until the character addresses the underlying cause, with Shawn sometimes ruling that they remain "until you can figure that out."

The system allows characters to accumulate multiple debilities simultaneously. During Session 10, Sucks noted having debilities to strength, constitution, and charisma all at once. The penalties stack, making even basic actions increasingly difficult as debilities accumulate. When Abdul attempted to use the Backstab move, the player noted the difficulty: "I don't have a dex. Stability. Wait, I use whatever you want. Three debilities."

The Constitution debility specifically represents physical illness, exhaustion, or internal damage that compromises a character's stamina and resilience. When applied to Sucks in Session 3, it came with an unusual side effect particular to this campaign. Shawn ruled that the debility [temporarily removed Sucks's characteristic horniness](timestamp://355acf0c-a859-4c94-ab24-c50f67c21797/00:00), creating what was described as a rare moment of clarity for the character. This illustrates how the campaign uses mechanical consequences to reinforce characterization and narrative moments.

Strength debilities affect a character's ability to perform physical tasks. During Session 6, Shawn assigned strength debilities based on which stat was actually rolled, correcting an initial ruling: "I mean, same thing, probably. No, you rolled your. You rolled your strength. So I'm going to say that to minus one strength because you're just. Joints are all locked up in a weird way." The strength debility prevented Sucks from using his arms effectively and affected his Defy Danger roll when attempting to escape Safia's grip.

Charisma debilities affect a character's ability to speak and interact socially. In Session 10, Shawn described how a constitution debility manifested for Sucks: "you're gonna be kind of coughing every once in a while. So it's gonna be really hard for you to actually get a sentence out. So you're not gonna be able to talk your way through stuff for a while." Though initially called a constitution debility, Shawn clarified it should apply to charisma instead, representing Sucks' inability to speak clearly due to constant violent coughing.

In at least one case, a debility was part of a mechanical trade-off. Sucks noted during Session 6: "I have a debility to strength but two armor now," demonstrating how debilities in Dungeon World can be part of a complex set of consequences that balance penalties with potential benefits.

History

Session 3

Sucks receives a Constitution debility after Abdul offers the character a smoke and Sucks attempts smoking for the first time. The mechanical consequence was announced by Shawn: "You're gonna mark a debility to constitution."

The debility was assigned after Sucks's catastrophic attempt at smoking, which resulted in violent coughing and something "popping" inside the character's body. Shawn described the severity: "Your body is racked. You feel something. Something pop inside you. You're coughing so hard. It goes on for a long time."

Sucks later acknowledges the consequence: "I took a debility because I tried to smoke."

Session 6

Both Cat and Sucks received strength debilities as consequences of failed rolls during a sweater competition. The debilities reflected the physical reality of having their joints locked up or arms trapped in multiple layers of sweaters.

Cat's debility came when a failed strength roll left the character with joints locked up in awkward positions from the sweaters. The -1 strength penalty represented the physical restriction this caused.

Sucks received a similar debility when multiple sweaters trapped his arms. Shawn ruled that "A lot of stuff is going to be hard for you because your arms are trapped." This debility prevented Sucks from climbing trees and affected his ability to break free when grabbed by Safia. However, the same sweater layers that caused the debility also provided +1 armor, creating a distinctive risk-reward situation.

Session 10

The debility mechanic became central to Session 10 when Sucks attempted to open one of The Caustic Barrels. After a catastrophic failure, Shawn instructed: "Give yourself a debility." The immediate physical effect was severe—"you open this barrel and all you see is like. Well, you don't even have time to really look because your eyes, nose and mouth are immediately burning."

When Sucks initially took the debility to constitution, Abdul pointed out "I already have a debility to constitution." Rather than stack the same debility, Shawn clarified the new debility should apply to charisma instead. This brought Sucks' total debilities to three, as the character noted also having "a debility with strength too."

The accumulation of debilities significantly hampered Sucks' effectiveness throughout the session. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Shawn acknowledged: "I might have been a little too heavy handed with the abilities. Feel free to get rid of one of those."
