Wizard Spells
Summary
Wizard spells are a category of magical abilities in Dungeon World, distinct from cleric spells. While some overlap exists between the two spell lists—such as Light and Detect Magic—wizards access different spells than clerics do. In Session 11 of the campaign, Shawn offers Brad the option to give Cat access to wizard spells rather than cleric spells "in the interest of variety," since Vasso already has access to cleric spells. This would differentiate the two spellcasting characters in the party.
Details
Wizard spells represent one of two primary spellcasting traditions available to player characters in this campaign. The spell lists for wizards and clerics differ, though certain utility spells appear on both lists. The system allows for flexibility in character creation, as demonstrated when Shawn presented Brad with the choice between spell lists for Cat's character.
During the discussion in Session 11, Brad responded to the offer with interest—"I don't know what those are, but salt"—and began looking up wizard spells to understand the options. The conversation also revealed that Brad had been overlooking this aspect of Cat's abilities, admitting "I keep forgetting. Cat has spells." The wizard spell list would provide magical variety within the party composition, avoiding redundancy with Vasso's cleric spells.
History
Session 11
In Session 11, Shawn raised the possibility of giving Cat access to wizard spells as an alternative to cleric spells. The proposal came explicitly "in the interest of variety," noting that Vasso currently has access to cleric spells while wizards have different spells available. Brad expressed interest in the option despite unfamiliarity with the wizard spell list and acknowledged that Cat has spells as part of their character abilities—a feature Brad admitted to forgetting. Brad then began researching what wizard spells are available in Dungeon World.
