Safia's Failed Animal Communication
Summary
In Session 3, after Sucks failed to open the portcullis containing the Sniff Lord, Safia attempted to use animal communication to negotiate with the creature. Safia rolled a 3 on the spell lore check, and through this attempt learned that the Sniff Lord was created through illegal scientific experiments in the city—scientists attempting to create the perfect being by combining human and animal traits. The attempt failed because the Sniff Lord exists as neither quite a person nor quite an animal, preventing Safia's AI-targeting system from locking onto it. This failure eliminated communication as a viable escape option and forced the party to seek alternative solutions.
Details
With the portcullis still sealed, Sucks turned to Safia for help: "Zephia King. Can you talk to this thing or something? You could talk to animals, right?" Safia agreed to try.
Safia rolled to cast the spell and got a critically low result. "It's such a low. Oh my gosh. It's such a low... I rolled three and then I tell them 03," Erin reported. Despite the poor roll, the attempt yielded information about the creature's origins. Shawn revealed the background: "You do think that you have heard stories about scientists in your. In the city that would experiment on people you usually illegally. Like they would. They were just obsessed with the idea of making like the perfect being by taking like the most beneficial aspects of the. The animal kingdom and the most beneficial aspects of man and mixing them together. But it never worked. It always was a disaster."
The critical problem became clear when Shawn explained the technical limitation: "The thing that is the failure that, you know for sure. Is that because it's not quite a person?" The GM continued: "Since it's not quite a person and not quite an animal, you're pretty sure that you will not be like you're the AI that targets things for you to be able to communicate is just like it's not even sure where to lock onto this thing and you're not getting any results back, so you're not going to be able to talk to it."
Participants
- Safia — attempted the animal communication spell, rolled a 3, and learned about the Sniff Lord's origins
- Sucks — requested that Safia try to communicate with the creature after his own portcullis attempt failed
- The Sniff Lord — the target of the failed communication attempt, revealed to be a failed scientific experiment
- Erin — played Safia and reported the low roll result
- Shawn — as GM, adjudicated the spell attempt and revealed the Sniff Lord's backstory and the reason for the failure
Consequences
- The party confirmed that peaceful communication with the Sniff Lord was impossible, eliminating one potential escape route
- Safia learned critical backstory about the Sniff Lord's nature as a failed experiment combining human and animal traits
- The revelation about illegal scientific experimentation in the city provided world-building context about the setting's ethical boundaries
- The AI-targeting limitation established a mechanical precedent for how Safia's communication ability functions when faced with hybrid or ambiguous creatures
- The party was forced to seek alternative solutions to their predicament, as both the portcullis opening and communication approaches had failed
