Counterfeit Goat Horns Merchant
Summary
The Counterfeit Goat Horns Merchant is a scam artist encountered by Sucks Benedict at the New Smoke Aftermarket in Session 8 of the campaign. This merchant operates a dishonest business selling antlers disguised as Goat Horns, claiming to be sold out of genuine horns while warning that "goat people" carefully control the image of "the one goat that exists in the world." The merchant successfully cons Sucks Benedict out of 20 coins before revealing that the stall isn't even theirs and fleeing with the money. The transaction is voiced by the GM Shawn.
Appearance
The merchant operates from a stall at the New Smoke Aftermarket. No physical description of the merchant is provided in the session material. The counterfeit goods themselves—antlers being passed off as Goat Horns—are noted to look nothing like actual goat horns, making the deception particularly brazen.
History
Session 8
The merchant first claims to Sucks Benedict that they have been sold out of Goat Horns since noon, stating: "Oh, man. I've been sold out of goat horns since 12. Well, see, I told elk we can't keep. We can't keep them on the shelves. People are buying them so fast."
When pressed about counterfeit horns, the merchant becomes visibly nervous, responding: "Okay, shut. Lower your voice. Counterfeit goat horns. Get out. You're gonna get me in trouble with goat people, they want to very carefully control the image of the wolf. One goat that exists in the world." This warning about "goat people" and their control over the image of "the one goat that exists in the world" suggests either genuine fear or an elaborate component of the scam.
Despite the nervousness, the merchant admits to the counterfeit nature of the goods without shame, stating: "I guess you hit it right on the head. Nailed it. I'm not even ashamed. That's my Price, I'll do anything." The merchant values their willingness to commit fraud at exactly 20 coins.
After receiving payment from Sucks Benedict, the merchant reveals the full extent of the deception: "I'm, I'm. I'm rich now. You know what? I'm gonna be honest with you. This isn't even my stall. See ya." The merchant then flees with the 20 coins, abandoning the stall entirely.
The item sold to Sucks Benedict—antlers disguised as Goat Horns—looked nothing like actual goat horns, making the quality of the counterfeit particularly poor.
