Uneventful Night Watch
Summary
The Uneventful Night Watch occurred in Session 6 as the party made camp in a pumpkin field during their journey to New Smoke. Sucks Benedict volunteered for watch duty and donned multiple sweaters (+1 armor) in anticipation of combat, hoping bandits or other threats would attack so he could test his enhanced defenses. The GM called for a watch roll, and Sucks rolled 2d6 with no modifier, achieving a result that allowed the night to pass peacefully. Despite Sucks' preparation and eagerness for a fight, no threats materialized, leaving the volunteer guard disappointed at the lack of action.
Details
As the party settled into their pumpkin field camp, the GM announced, "Pick is on watch. Because whoever's on watch is gonna roll something." Sucks Benedict immediately volunteered: "I'll take watch."
Sucks prepared for the watch by layering on approximately four sweaters, gaining +1 armor from the makeshift protection. The additional layers made Sucks feel invincible, and the character specifically hoped someone would attack the camp so the enhanced defenses could be tested in actual combat.
The GM called for a watch roll. Sucks rolled 2d6 with no modifier to determine how the night would unfold. The result was favorable enough that the GM declared, "The night passes without incident." No bandits approached, no monsters emerged from the waste, and no other threats disturbed the camp's rest.
The peaceful night left Sucks deeply frustrated. The character had put on multiple sweaters specifically anticipating combat and was "so upset" that no one attacked, rendering the defensive preparation pointless.
When morning came, Cat woke up next to a new 'credit card'—the card-like object from earlier in the campaign. Sucks claimed to no longer possess it, stating it had been lost in a bet.
Participants
- Sucks Benedict — Volunteered for watch duty, wore multiple sweaters for +1 armor, rolled the watch move, and was disappointed when nothing attacked
- Cat — Slept through the watch, woke up next to the credit card object
Consequences
- The party completed a full night's rest without taking damage or expending resources, allowing them to continue their journey to New Smoke at full strength
- Sucks' +1 armor from the sweaters went untested, as no combat occurred
- The credit card object reappeared next to Cat, though Sucks claimed to have lost it in a bet, raising questions about how it moved
- The peaceful watch demonstrated that not every night in the waste brings danger, contrasting with the hostile encounters the party had faced earlier in their journey
