Game Boy Device
Summary
The Game Boy Device is a handheld gaming console confiscated by New Smoke Guards at the entrance to New Smoke during Session 7 of the campaign. Described as a plastic and metal square with a small screen, the device resembles a Game Boy handheld gaming system. Its confiscation illustrates the strict technology control enforced in New Smoke, as well as the guards' hypocrisy—after violently seizing the device and arresting its owner, the guards immediately attempt to boot it up and play games on it.
Properties
The device is a plastic and metal square with a little screen built into it. While initially compared in shape to a Zune portable media player, Shawn confirmed the object was "a full on Game Boy" in his conception of the scene. The device appears to be functional, as the New Smoke Guards were able to attempt booting it up after confiscation. The device operates through some form of electronic power source and contains games that can be played on its screen.
History
Session 7
The Game Boy Device appeared during Safia's observation of the checkpoint at New Smoke's entrance. Guards conducting searches discovered the device while patting down a person attempting to enter the town. One guard exclaimed, "ho ho, what's this? Didn't want to declare this, huh?" when finding the undeclared technology.
When the owner tried to grab the device back, a tussle broke out. The guards ripped the Game Boy from the person's hands, knocked them to the ground, and dragged them away to jail. After removing the arrested person, the guards turned their attention to the confiscated device itself. One guard moved aside while another tried to boot up the Game Boy, demonstrating that the guards intended to use the very technology they had just violently confiscated.
This incident revealed both the extent of technological prohibition in New Smoke and the corrupt enforcement practices of its guards, who confiscate items they want for themselves rather than destroying them or following consistent policy.
