Summary

Shawn explains the reference as "a story in which two people who have a music player and a disc... to get the gift for one another. So the bow person sells their bow to get a music disc and the music player person sells theirs to get an arrow and they find out, oh no, we wanted to do a nice thing for the other person, but in the attempt we negated their gift."

The reference is invoked when Cat attempts to sell Sucks Benedict to the salvager woman in exchange for musical discs. The situation becomes paradoxical because Sucks possesses the music player needed to use the discs, while the salvager woman has the discs but lacks the player. The Teenage Salvager Woman herself observes, "I believe your friend is attempting to set sell you to me in exchange for musical discs," to which Sucks responds, "But that's not. That doesn't make sense because I have the music player."

The reference captures the self-defeating nature of the proposed exchange: if the trade were completed, the salvager woman would gain the music player but lose the discs, while Cat would acquire discs without access to the player needed to use them.
