Cat Attempts a Called Shot at the Gordian
Summary
During Session 5, Cat attempted a precision attack on the Gordian as it moved through the Money Pumpkin Field. From her position on the cart, she spotted the creature pulling itself through the field and decided to shoot an arrow through one of its jack-o-lantern eye holes. Cat rolled a 9 on her Called Shot, a partial success that could have been improved to a 10 with aid from another party member. However, the resolution of this attack was interrupted by technical difficulties when Erin lost audio connectivity and could not hear the other players, leaving the outcome of the shot unresolved as the session paused for troubleshooting.
Details
As the Gordian moved through the pumpkin field, Cat asked, "Can I see the little pumpkin guy?" The GM confirmed she could spot it, describing how "it's about the same size as the pumpkins around it. And it's moving now like it's pulling itself through the field so you catch glimpses of it."
Rather than taking a standard shot, Cat attempted a more challenging attack: "Can I do a called shot on its head and try to aim for one of its jack o lantern holes?" The GM approved the attempt, calling for her to roll 2d6 plus dexterity for a called shot to the head.
Cat rolled a 9—a partial success in Dungeon World. The GM noted that "if someone were to aid, that would make it a 10," offering the possibility of another party member improving the result. Before the group could resolve whether anyone would provide aid or what the consequences of the shot would be, Erin experienced audio problems. The other players realized Erin could not hear them, with someone asking "Did you mute? Oh, that's weird. Maybe try closing and reopening. Can you hear now?" The session stopped to troubleshoot the connectivity issue, leaving the called shot's outcome pending.
Participants
- Cat — attempted the called shot from her position on the cart
- Gordian — the target of the attack, moving through the pumpkin field
- Erin — experienced audio connectivity issues that interrupted resolution of the action
- The GM — adjudicated the mechanics of the called shot and described the Gordian's movement
Consequences
- Cat's called shot remained mechanically unresolved due to the technical interruption
- The possibility of aid from another party member was raised but not acted upon before the audio issue occurred
- The session paused to restore Erin's audio connection, suspending the combat encounter
- The 9 result remained on the table as a potential partial success pending the resolution of technical difficulties
